Halo: The Master Chief Collection Is Adding Input-Based Matchmaking

343 Industries has provided another Halo: The Master Chief Collection development update, including news about input-based matchmaking and other new additions. The team is set to add Halo 3: ODST to the collection for all players soon, and that will come alongside a new season of cosmetic items to earn and a few new additions to the Halo 3 multiplayer sandbox. Three weapons from Halo 3's spinoff will finally find their place in multiplayer, meaning that Spartans can wield the Brute Plasma Rifle, Silenced SMG, and Tactical Magnum in multiplayer matchmaking everywhere from Sandtrap to Guardian.

Released in November of 2014, Halo: The Master Chief Collection has basically gone into a second development cycle to facilitate its release on PC and Xbox Game Pass. This has included the addition of an entirely new game in Halo Reach as well as a fully refined matchmaking system that allows players to pick and choose which gametypes and games they want to play at any given moment. In previous updates, 343 Industries added weapon and vehicle skins to the original Halo: Combat Evolved as well as plenty of behind-the-scenes updates to improve the player experience on PC and Xbox platforms.

In this new update on Halo Waypoint, 343 Industries details its addition of input-based matchmaking and how it will function similarly to Master Chief Collection's gametype mixing and matching. MCC technical designer Dana Jerpbak explains that the game will seek out teams evenly stocked with players using mouse and keyboard or gamepads, no matter their platform. Certain gametypes will factor this in less, particularly Infection and Firefight modes, since those are less competitive environments. However, in order to cross-pollinate Xbox and PC without ruining Halo's delicate combat balance, the game will make sure that players are going up against those with the same tools at their disposal.

Other updates in the blog post include details on how the trio of Halo 3: ODST weapons will work in matchmaking as well as a few hints as to the cosmetic items available in Season 3. Perhaps most exciting, ODST's Tactical Magnum is being redesigned to fit the slot of a precision handgun, much like Halo: Combat Evolved's M6D Pistol and Halo 5: Guardians' default scoped magnum. Considering that the game truly lacks in a starting weapon that excels at headshots, an entirely new range of gametypes could be devised to bring the game more in line with the rest of the franchise, should 343 choose to go in that direction.

However, the important thing is that players of Halo: The Master Chief Collection on all platforms will now have the option of playing together. With this update, the Halo community is truly connected under one banner for the first time and without the control imbalances that can often occur in cross-play. Considering the delay of Halo Infinite, it's a necessary move that should hopefully shoulder some of the disappointment and give Master Chief fans some new toys to play with until the unveiling of the revised release date. On Xbox Series X, players will be able to enjoy the full history of Microsoft's signature shooter on day one, and that's got to count for something.
