The Incredibles and its sequel are two of Pixar’s finest movies in its catalog, and the main cast of heroes are some of the liveliest and original characters ever. However, it’s the great side characters that helped the sequel become the highest-grossing Pixar movie ever, and it’s one of the reasons it’s the best-animated superhero movie.
Edna Mode is the MVP of the whole series, as she only appears in one or two scenes per movie, but those scenes are complete showstoppers. From the way she carries herself, to being a mad-genius, t0 her interaction with Jack Jack, she is one of the reasons Incredibles 2 is a great sequel. But when it comes to the very best side character in Pixar’s canon of colorful characters, Edna has some tough competition.
10 Edna’s The Best: The Sass
Though it can’t be proven, Edna must be channeling Anna Wintour, who basically runs the fashion industry, and they both share the same hairstyle and big glasses. However, even though the way Edna speaks to Mr. Incredible might be the same way Wintour speaks to her interns, Edna’s character is clearly a huge exaggeration of the fashion guru. Edna’s sass is what makes her so hilarious, from smacking Mr. Incredible to the way she negotiates, it’s amazing how even superheroes are scared of her.
9 Alternative: Duke Caboom
The character may have the exact same story arc as Buzz Lightyear’s in the first movie, but Duke Caboom was easily the most exciting new character introduced to the series and one of the toys from Toy Story 4 fans need to see again.
The original characters may have gotten less screen-time due to the new characters, but it was worth it for Caboom’s scenes alone. Between Caboom’s chauvinistic bravado, his patriotism towards Canada, and his excitement towards performing stunts, the character deserves his own spin-off series.
8 Edna’s The Best: The Voice
It may come as a surprise, but Edna isn’t voiced by a woman, but by a man, and that just happens to be Brad Bird, the director of the movie. The director wasn’t always going to voice the role, as he actually auditioned Lily Tomlin, who was the person to tell him he should play the character. The way he pronounces words and prolongs sentences is hilarious, and whenever the character exclaims “dah-ling” is iconic.
7 Alternative: Roz
Audiences haven’t heard much from Roz, as she’s had very few lines in the Monsters Inc series, but her deep, throaty voice is the voice of the movie in some aspects. First being the receptionist at Monsters Inc, she woefully had it in for Mike and Sully, and it led to some hilariously antagonistic moments. And though it’s one of the worst sequels that Pixar has released, Roz’s cameo at the very end of Monsters University reveals her in a very surprising occupation, and it was possibly the best moment of the movie.
6 Edna’s The Best: The Way She Looks
From her hair, to dressing all in black, to the thick-framed glasses balancing on her comedically giant nose, Edna looks unlike any other animated character in history. Even down to the way she walks, Edna oddly shuffles her tiny feet in a way the makes her bounce up and down, which subsequently makes her bob shake too. Anybody who visits her in her mansion always watches in astonishment, no matter how long they’ve known her for.
5 Alternative: Anger
With the five emotions that occupy Riley’s mind, any one of the side characters could give Edna a run for her money, as all of the characters are fascinating in their own ways, but Anger is by far the funniest, and the most misunderstood too.
Though he only consumes one emotion, there’s so much depth to Anger, and he’s strangely somewhat reminiscent to Seinfeld’s George Costanza too. If there was ever a sequel to Inside Out, it would be great to see Anger lead the movie in the same way that Sadness did, and explore Riley’s personality islands.
4 Edna’s The Best: She’s A Genius
Edna is most famous for her 'no capes' speech, as she refuses to add capes to super-suits due to how inconvenient they are, always getting snagged on elevators and pulling heroes into hurricanes.
And on top of that, when it comes to designing Jack Jack’s suit in Incredibles 2, it’s clear how much she knows about physics and engineering too. She might sound crazy most of the time, but when it comes to designing super suits, there’s a method to her madness.
3 Alternative: Frozone
Edna isn’t the only great side character in the Incredibles series, as Frozone is by far the coolest superhero of them all and arguably has the best superpower too. Slinging himself through the sky on a rail of ice while reeling off a ton of heroic quotes is the best part of the movie. His role expands in the sequel too, as he’s forced to save the children when they’re home alone, and he almost steals the show from the main characters.
2 Edna’s The Best: Relationship With Jack Jack
Jack Jack is one of the reasons the sequel is better, as his bust up with the raccoon is possibly the best scene of the whole movie, but it’s when Edna gets a hold of him when his scenes really become special. Edna surprisingly lets her guard down around Jack Jack and she isn’t always the demanding designer around the baby, as she finds him almost as adorable as much as she wants to experiment with his powers.
1 Alternative: Mr. Potato head
When it comes to Toy Story, almost every character from the original movie is iconic, whether it’s Rex, Slinky, or Bo Peep. But the one character that stands above all the others, if he has his legs attached that is, is Mr. Potato Head. He’s even better in Toy Story 2 when Mrs. Potato Head packs all of his belongings before the adventure to Al’s Toy Barn. On top of that, he’s the subject of one of the most interesting fan theories about the series.
