Blade Assembled the Best Avengers Team to Take Down Mephisto

SPOILER WARNING for Heroes Reborn #7 and Heroes Return #1!

When it came time for the Avengers to finally take on the Squadron Supreme in the altered reality of Heroes Reborn, Blade managed to put together the most powerful team to undo the chaos caused by Mephisto and Phil Coulson.

At the beginning of Marvel’s Heroes Reborn event, Blade is the only Avenger that remembers the world as it should be. Hoping to set things right, he starts searching for his fellow Avengers, but learns that many of them are no longer the heroes he once knew. Former teammates like Carol Danvers, Jennifer Walters, and Robbie Reyes never gained their powers, and Tony Stark never gave up his life as a weapons mogul. Some heroes even became straight up villains in this new reality, with Wanda Maximoff, Clint Barton, and Natasha Romanoff all fighting against the Squadron Supreme.

Still, Blade doesn’t give up on his quest to bring back the Avengers, and in Jason Aaron, Aaron Kuder, and Dean White’s Heroes Reborn #7, he assembles his team at last. With the battle lines drawn, this all-star roster of Avengers finally takes on the Squadron Supreme in an epic showdown in Heroes Return #1 by Aaron, Ed McGuinness, and Mark Morales. They manage to set the world right and show once and for all why this squad is truly comprised of Earth's Mightiest Heroes.

The first hero Blade recruits into his new team of Avengers is Captain America. Since the Avengers never formed in this current reality, they were never able to discover the super soldier frozen in a block of ice, and so that’s where Steve Rogers remained until Blade comes to his rescue. In Heroes Reborn #2, after being thawed out by the Daywalker and being told about the messed up state of the world, Captain America runs off to explore things on his own. Despite having been frozen for 70 years, Cap recognizes that something is off after a run-in with the Squadron Supreme’s Hyperion. Realizing that Blade is right, the First Avenger decides to join the vampiric hero in his efforts to fix reality.

Next on Blade’s list is Maya Lopez, AKA Echo, a recent addition to the Avengers in Marvel’s main continuity. While the deaf, Cheyenne hero’s powers are normally rooted in her photographic reflexes, she gained the attention of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes by becoming the new host of the Phoenix Force. According to Nighthawk in Heroes Reborn #7, the Maya Lopez of Mephisto’s reality initially worked as an assassin for the Kingpin before being incarcerated at Ravencroft Asylum. Apparently, her new Phoenix Force powers followed her into this twisted new world though, as she is shown using her cosmic abilities from her prison cell. Cap and Blade don’t have to use much persuasion to get her on board with their plans, as Maya has also noticed that reality has been tampered with, even temporarily believing herself to be the cause. Luckily, the heroes manage to break the Phoenix out of jail, gaining a major powerhouse for their squad.

The Star Brand is a weapon that grants its wielder an immense set of powers and it has had several owners over the years. In Marvel’s main reality, a baby is the Star Brand’s current holder, and in Heroes Reborn, the same child still possesses its amazing abilities. Having been taken in and raised by Rocket Raccoon and Groot, who serve as the best bounty hunters in the galaxy, Starbrand is now several years older and she seems to have a pretty great handle over her powers. Sadly, in Heroes Reborn #4, Rocket falls at the hands of Doctor Spectrum, leaving Starbrand devastated and ready for some revenge. Just as she prepares to take off for Earth, however, Okoye arrives in a Wakandan spaceship to bring the child to the Avengers, adding another heavy-hitter to Blade’s crew.

Wakanda stayed hidden from the rest of Mephisto's distorted world and was therefore written off as a myth. Of course, this makes the vibranium-rich nation a perfect place for Blade’s secret team to hideout, and as a bonus, they add Black Panther to their ranks. In Heroes Reborn #5, readers get their first look at T’Challa, who battles Nighthawk using the persona of Ronin. Feeling something wrong with this false reality, Black Panther goes looking for answers and believes that he can find them in the Squadron Supreme’s headquarters. His confrontation with Nighthawk forces T’Challa to retreat, but when the Avengers come calling, he is ready to unite with them and provide whatever resources they may need in their escapades.

Thor may be the last hero to join Blade’s team, but he’s also one of the first heroes that the Daywalker approaches. In Heroes Reborn #1, Blade finds Thor at a bar in Norway and realizes that the God of Thunder has forgotten his life as an Asgardian. As Blade tries to jog his memory, Thor grows frustrated and tells him to leave. At the end of the issue, however, Thor slams his drinking horn down onto a table, and with a flash of lightning, Mjolnir appears in his hand. It’s revealed later on in Heroes Reborn #6 that Thor has been drunk for centuries, but with his head now clear, he realizes the oddities present in his current reality. After returning to an abandoned Asgard and engaging in a brief battle with Power Princess, the Avenger departs on his own journey for truth. Not too long after he sets off, however, Thor is approached by the Phoenix, who tells him about Blade’s crew and brings him back to Wakanda to join the rest of their teammates.

While this ragtag group may not include all the Avengers that fans are used to, it’s certainly still a worthwhile team with incredibly powerful members. Even with a soldier, a king, a god, and two cosmic forces though, their final battle is anything but easy. The Squadron Supreme is a menacing team, especially considering the enhanced abilities that each member has shown in Mephisto’s reality, and the finale of Heroes Reborn shows Blade’s group giving it everything they've got in order to prevail and set things right. Their performance in the epic final battle proves that they are the ultimate team of warriors to fight any menace that threatens the Marvel Universe.
