Greek Mythology Becomes Awkwardly Adorable in Plunderworld

The Webtoon series Plunderworld, which features an adorably relatable and awkward retelling of the Hades and Persephone myth, is being published as an original graphic novel by Image Comics. The OGN will be under the Top Cow Productions imprint. In this version of the story, Hades and Persephone have been pining after each other for 200 years. When a festival finally gives them a chance to get together, the Greek pantheon and a handful of misunderstandings may stand in the way of their relationship from fully blooming.

Plunderworld is from writer and artist Linda Šejić. Šejić has worked on other books for Top Cow before, including working on the covers for most of their Postal series. She also worked as the artist on Swing, which served as a spinoff to her husband Stjepan Šejić's erotic comedy Sunstone. Another webcomic Šejić created is the mad scientist slice of life series Blood Stain.

The Plunderworld news covered on Comic Book Resources mentions that the series would get its first volume in the form of an original graphic novel this August. In a comment about the series, Šejić shares: "Punderworld allowed me to incorporate all the things I loved the most since I was in high school: Mythological beings in their unlimited creativity, which always tickled my imagination set in a fantasy setting with lots of nature morphed into an awkward comedic romance," and adding that "I am beyond excited about getting it printed, and I can’t wait to hold it in my hands."

Checking its current Webtoon standings, Plunderworld sits at an impressive 14.6 million views, approximately 357,800 subscribers, and it is ranked a score of 9.77 out of 10. As one of the more popular webcomics, it wouldn't be surprising if it received an animated series adaptation, similar to some other popular works on Webtoon. The series is currently 21 episodes in with the season one finale having gone up on May 13, 2021. The creator uploads every three weeks on Thursday, though the book is currently on a break as fans anxiously await the next season.

This is actually not the first announcement that a Webtoon retelling the story of Persephone and Hades to be released this year offline in a physical format. Earlier this year it was announced that the Webtoon Lore Olympus would be collected in a trade paperback series from Del Rey Books and Random House. The first volume, which collects episodes 1-25 from the series as well as an exclusive bonus chapter, will be out on October 5, 2021. So despite the news dropping earlier, readers will be able to enjoy holding Plunderworld in their hands when it lands in comic book stores on August 25 or bookstores on August 31. These two Webtoon series really demonstrate just how different retellings of the same story can be, between their distinctive art styles and storytelling techniques, and readers can enjoy both for free on Webtoons while waiting for their physical copies. It's nice to see more and more depictions that don't pain Hades as a straight-up villain and give Persephone even more character and agency.
