Why Chris Pratt Isn't In Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Game

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy is an upcoming action-adventure game developed by Eidos-Montreal, but MCU fans won’t be seeing Chris Pratt’s voice talents in this project. Since its reveal, Eidos-Montreal has clarified that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy doesn't share MCU's continuity. As additional GotG trailers revealed more information about the in-game universe, it’s clear developers have done all they can to create a unique, independent vision. While the cast of the Guardians team hasn’t changed, their backstories and legacies have significantly departed from the MCU’s versions.

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy occurs after a Galactic War between the Chitauri and the rest of the universe. Each Guardians’ life has been upended by the calamity left in its wake, suffering losses or becoming heroes during the bloodshed. GotG's Drax the Destroyer killed Thanos in battle, though he seems to believe Thanos survived. Gamora, once a Daughter of Thanos, defected from the Mad Titan to join the Nova Corps and help them defeat the Chitauri. Rocket and Groot are both endangered species and dedicated partners-in-crime. Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord, likely endured the most changes to his character from the MCU.

From the limited backstory Eidos-Montreal has revealed, Peter Quill was kidnapped from Earth as a teenager during Guardians of the Galaxy's Chitauri War. His mother was killed, and Peter was imprisoned for several years as ransom to force his father, the ruler of a distant planet, to surrender. The Chitauri held Peter captive for years, where he met Yondu Udonta. The pair escaped together, leading Peter to join the Ravagers and become Star-Lord. After the the war's end, Star-Lord created the Guardians of the Galaxy, a hero-for-hire team that planned to profit off the post-war chaos.

Given the lengths Eidos-Montreal has gone to make a unique world, it’s no surprise that Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord won't appear in Guardians of the Galaxy. In a recent video, Eidos-Montreal detailed various inspirations from GotG comics that allowed the team to explore lesser-known aspects of the team and universe. Great efforts seem to have been made to include new designs, unique voice actors, and different narratives so that the team could keep the material tailored toward games as a medium.

Despite the popularity of the MCU portrayals and their iconic versions of the characters, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game is likely being geared to appeal to an audience that doesn't just include existing MCU fans. While some of those moviegoers undoubtedly enjoy games as well, Eidos-Montreal seems to be banking on a more bespoke vision of the characters stepping back from the expectations set by the films.
