Pokémon fans taking a break from Sword and Shield to explore the more tropical setting of Animal Crossing: New Horizons are getting creative with their crossovers, engaging in adorable P0kémon battle recreations with their animal residents.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons players are bringing as much creativity to their play as Nintendo has come to expect from the series' fan community - perhaps now more than ever thanks to the game's immense customization options. Creating and combining an infinitely growing catalog of custom designs, the craftiest players are sharing clothing, locales, and even mini-games like obstacle courses that the game's developers couldn't have possibly predicted. It's an organic experience built around a unique crossroads of accessible gameplay and a boundless endgame that runs as deeply as players can stomach. Accordingly, players' favorite types of fan-created content among both casual and core audiences are by far Photopia scenarios and outfits that crossover with other popular franchises.
It's unsurprising, then, that Redditor yurkth blew a lot of minds with the relative simplicity behind their ingenious Photopia creation, which pitted his character and fan-cherished villager Raymond in a Pokémon battle. Using only the Backyard Fence wall and simple grass-themed flooring with a few tiles of clever custom designs laid upon it, Raymond's "Butterfree" (an emperor butterfly sculpture) and yurkth's "Squirtle" (one of the games' awkwardly stationary captive snapping turtles) appear to have just been thrown out of pokéballs to face one another. To properly translate the Pokémon experience over to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, a before picture shows Raymond posed with the surprised reaction as the player enters their line of sight, initiating the mock contest.
Yurkth's quickly hit the front page of Reddit's Animal Crossing subreddit, and is gaining even more well-earned visibility on Twitter after being amplified by the likes of the popular Out Of Context Animal Crossing account. While many of the viral creations that make other Animal Crossing: New Horizons players reevaluate their entire island lives are normally made possible by a massive wealth of bells and time, the above Pokémon-inspired brilliance joins a proud minority of concepts requiring few resources but vast amounts of creativity to pull off.
The absolute best of the Animal Crossing: New Horizons creative scene is going to be up for debate years down the line, and players and fans will surely enjoy every second of it. This Pokémon-themed masterpiece is sure to be a longtime subject of admiration, as well as inspire even more ambitious fan crossovers.
