The newest Dune movie image reveals a Josh Brolin and Timothee Chalamet action scene. Published in 1965, Frank Herbert’s novel Dune is considered one of the great classics of science-fiction literature. The 1984 movie adaptation of Dune from director David Lynch is however not considered one of the great classics of sci-fi cinema.
Almost forty years after Lynch whiffed in his attempt at bringing Herbert’s far future vision to life on movie screens, acclaimed filmmaker Denis Villeneuve will take another stab at it with his own version of Dune. Unlike Lynch, Villeneuve has the luxury of breaking his Dune adaptation into two films, hopefully allowing him to tell Herbert’s sprawling story without having to compress things and leave important things out (as Lynch was forced to do). Villeneuve also has the advantage of modern-day computer effects, which should help greatly when it comes to envisioning the exotic worlds Herbert dreamed up on the page.
The latest image from Dune (via Empire) indeed affords a glimpse of Villeneuve’s vision for the movie. Brolin and Chalamet are featured in the picture, which sees their characters Gurney Halleck and Paul Atreides involved in an action scene. See the image in the space below:
The first few photos released from Dune showed Brolin, Chalamet and the movie’s other actors in relatively sedate poses, giving fans a chance to soak up the look of the characters, while this new photo is a little more dynamic. In the image, the characters of Gurney and Paul are both decked out in their Fremen stillsuits, which allow them to survive in the arid wastes of Arrakis. Specifically, the two characters are poised on an ornithopter as it soars over the dunes, and as Villeneuve himself told Empire:
“It’s Paul’s first contact with the deep desert, where he’s mesmerised by it. He has a strange feeling of being home. There’s a lot of action at this specific moment, and [it’s] one of the scenes in the movie that I’m starting to get pretty proud of.”
Of course, the deep desert of Arrakis is also the home of the sandworms, the giant creatures that live under the dunes and are ridden by the Fremen. Thus far, the sandworms’ appearance in the new Dune has been kept a secret, and fans are certainly excited to find out how Villeneuve has imagined these iconic sci-fi creatures. Unfortunately, Lynch’s 1984 Dune somewhat disappointed in its depiction of sandworms due to the limitations of special effects at the time. Villeneuve thankfully will have no such problems as he brings Arrakis’ massive and mysterious denizens to life in his own movie.
So far, the few glimpses fans have gotten of Villeneuve’s Dune have been incredibly intriguing, though naturally there have already been some complains, with some saying the movie looks too much like Star Wars. Of course, any sci-fi movie set in the desert is naturally going to remind folks of Star Wars, given how much time that movie series spends amid the dunes. This newest image likely won’t quiet the complaints that Villeneuve’s Dune is too Star Wars, but perhaps future images will make hardcore Dune fans a little happier.
