Godzilla Vs. Kong Prequel Comic Reveals Older, Bearded KONG

A preview comic for the upcoming Gozilla vs Kong movie has finally given a glimpse of the adult Kong, old and bearded, about to face his greatest challenge. The success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has led every studio to attempt to build their own shared universe - with differing degrees of success. The Monsterverse is one of the most exciting prospects, bringing Godzilla into head-on battle with King Kong.

Legendary Pictures are keeping the plot under wraps, not even explaining why all the Titans are headed to Skull Island. Still, every film release has been accompanied by tie-in comics and graphic novels. Legendary has been taking advantage of the current "WonderCon@Home" to tease some of the upcoming tie-ins, introducing a new Titan named Camazotz, named for a Mayan bat-god.

They also include stunning images of an older Kong, older and taller than ever before, bearing a long ragged beard. The Kong seen in Kong: Skull Island was clearly just a baby, explaining why he has now grown to such a size he can take on Godzilla. The King of the Monsters has clearly reigned on Skull Island for quite some time, and this now appears to be the biggest - and most imposing - incarnation in cinematic history. Meanwhile, he's let his hair grow - and is rocking a cool beard. Check out the photos of old Kong (via Kaiju News Outlet) below.

The comic panels also show an abnormally large Bengal tiger, a creature originally intended to appear in Kong: Skull Island. In The Art and Making of Kong: Skull Island, writer John Gatins described a scene that was never developed in which two of these creatures attacked the soldiers.

"The characters" had landed on the island and spent the night on the beach before they traveled inland. They sit around and drink beer by a fire and sign sailor shanties. I just loved it, but it was a bit kind of tangential to having to get to the meat of the matter. In the morning after this raucous night, two saber-toothed tigers come out of the jungle and sniff around the camp. Someone says, "Don't shoot and they'll go away," but the guy takes the shot and kills one. They were a pair, a male and a female, and the other one just goes nuts. It kills the guy who took the shot. It's like the inciting incident of a war, a kind of harbinger; you're in a place you don't know, and now you've awakened more than you know. It was the first indication that we're not in a normal place. There's no such thing as a saber-toothed tiger and it's enormous."

Fans were thrilled by the different designs of the tigers, given the species name Icaris tigris, so it's exciting to see them absorbed into the canon. This gives a sense of scale to Kong's growth, because he towers over the lone Icaris tigris seen in the panels. It will be interesting to see whether any of the other creatures designed for Kong: Skull Island appear in the coming showdown, or even make their way to the big screen in the future that follows Godzilla vs Kong.
