Hannibal: The Actresses Who Almost Played Clarice Starling

Before Julianne Moore got the part, multiple A-list actresses came close to taking over for Jodie Foster as Clarice Starling in 2001's Hannibal. Foster left big shoes to fill, as she won an Oscar for her work in The Silence of the Lambs, and today remains one of the most beloved heroines in the history of horror films. Clarice may have been a rookie, but Foster imbued her with an intelligence and a capability that made it perfectly believable to watch her play mental chess with Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

Unfortunately, Foster chose to exit Hannibal early on in the development process, as did Silence of the Lambs director Jonathan Demme. There were several reasons floated for Foster's departure at the time, but she would later confirm that she wasn't pleased with the script, which she felt did a disservice to Clarice as a character. Considering many readers thought Thomas Harris' Hannibal novel also did wrong by Clarice, it's not hard to believe that an adaptation of it produced similar feelings from Foster.

So that left new director Ridley Scott to try and replace Foster in her signature role. Julianne Moore ended up getting the gig, but she was by no means the only actress considered.

After Foster bowed out, no less than eight recognizable stars were at least briefly in contention for the Clarice Starling role in Hannibal. These included Angelina Jolie around the time of her Tomb Raider fame, Cate Blanchett near her turn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, X-Files - and future Hannibal TV show - star Gillian Anderson, Oscar-winner Hilary Swank, multi-time Emmy and Golden Globe nominee Ashley Judd, Mad About You and Twister star Helen Hunt, The Royal Tenenbaums and Shallow Hal-era Gwyneth Paltrow, and of course Julianne Moore. The final four was whittled down to Moore, Jolie, Blanchett, and Swank.

All four actresses are said to have discussed the role with Ridley Scott, but it was eventually decided that Swank, then in her mid-20s, was too young for the part. It's not clear why that seemingly wasn't a concern with Jolie, a year younger than Swank, but it's possible they just found Swank to be younger in appearance and not actual age. One of the deciding factors in Moore ultimately landing the Clarice role was the influence of Hannibal star Anthony Hopkins, who Scott consulted about who he would prefer as his leading lady. Hopkins had worked with Moore, and had a high opinion of her, and since Scott was already leaning toward her, that sealed the deal.
