Samsung Galaxy Watch 3 Owners In The U.S. Can Now Take ECG Readings

The Galaxy Watch 3 from Samsung now enables users to monitor their ECG readings. This feature was recently cleared by the FDA and is now accessible through the Samsung Health Monitor app, when used alongside a compatible Galaxy smartphone. With this feature, users will be able to monitor their heart rhythm and potentially detect any issues, like Atrial Fibrillation, also known as AFib.

First announced in August of this year, the Galaxy Watch 3 comes with a whole host of fitness and health-related features, including voice activation for tracking workouts, along with a sensor which can alert emergency contacts if someone trips and falls. Along with a new blood pressure sensor, the Galaxy Watch 3 also comes with the ability to read the user’s ECG. Also known as electrocardiogram and also abbreviated as EKG, this is a measurement of the electrical activity of someone’s heart when they’re at rest. Each heartbeat produces an electrical readout, or a wave, which is what the ECG machine -- or, in this case, Galaxy Watch 3 sensor -- picks up on. An ECG test can be used to detect various heart diseases or irregularities, like AFib, which is a type of irregular heartbeat, or if someone’s arteries are blocked or narrowed.

According to a press release from Samsung, users will now have access to the ECG feature on both the Galaxy Watch 3 and the Galaxy Watch Active 2. The United States Food and Drug Administration recently cleared the feature, which means Samsung has proven that the Galaxy Watch 3 is comparable enough to other previously cleared products, thereby ensuring it’s also safe and works in a similar manner. In order to use the ECG Monitor app, the user needs to have the Samsung Health Monitor app on their compatible Galaxy smartphone. First, they need to sit down and start up the Samsung Health Monitor app, while making sure the watch is secured on their wrist. Then, they should rest their arm on a flat surface and put a finger against the top button of the watch -- an arrow on the screen of the watch will point to the correct button -- and the watch will record an ECG.

The Galaxy Watch 3 comes with other tools and features aimed at elevating the user’s fitness regimen. People can also use the watch to track the oxygen level in their blood, as well as receiving VO2 max reports, meaning they can track the amount of oxygen they’re taking in while exercising outdoors. In addition, the Galaxy Watch 3 offers a digital running coach who can give the user real-time feedback about their workouts, along with post-workout reports. Users can also monitor their sleep patterns with the watch, including REM cycles, breathing, and other vitals.

In terms of design, the Galaxy Watch 3 also features a rotating bezel and a leather strap, along with the opportunity to choose from over 50,000 watch faces. With the Samsung Health App, the user has access to tons of workout videos that can also be cast to a TV. There are a lot of options out there for smartwatches, from the new Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch Series 6, to the Fitbit Sense. Whether it's a Samsung smartwatch or not, wearers can work out and stay healthy, including making sure they enjoy a good sleep schedule, just by checking in with the technology on their wrist.
