Pop culture connoisseur and Clerks III director Kevin Smith has taken a tongue-in-cheek jab at fans disappointed with his Masters of the Universe series currently streaming on Netflix. Smith first rose to prominence in 1994 by winning the Filmmaker’s Trophy at the Sundance Film Festival with his debut, black and white comedy Clerks. In addition to his long-running “View Askewniverse” films, which all featuring appearances from the iconic duo Jay and Silent Bob, Smith has also lent his talents to comic-book writing, podcasting, stand-up comedy, and animation.
In 2019 Smith announced that he would be helming a new Masters of the Universe animated series intended as a direct sequel to the original cartoon from the 1980s. The first half of Smith’s series, dubbed Masters of Universe: Revelation, was released recently on Netflix, with the second half of the season still yet to receive an official release date. Despite the first five episodes faring well with critics, the show experienced review bombing from fans disappointed with the controversial decision to seemingly kill off He-Man’s character in the first episode and focus on Teela’s character instead.
Currently gearing up to begin filming the long-awaited threequel to his debut film Clerks, Smith seems more than aware of the backlash his Masters of the Universe series has garnered. Taking to Twitter, Smith suggested that the film may kill off Brian O’Halloran’s character Dante Hicks in the first act because his “storytelling senses tell me audiences universally love that trope.” Check out the hilarious tweet below:
Meanwhile, Smith’s attention is now firmly fixed on delivering the third entry in his Clerks trilogy, going back to his roots and filming it entirely in his hometown of New Jersey. Returning alongside Smith’s own Silent Bob for the film are original stars Jason Mewes (Jay), Jeff Anderson (Randal), Brian O'Halloran (Dante), as well as Ahsoka’s Rosario Dawson who will be reprising her role from the sequel, Becky. Filming on Clerks III is currently set to get underway next week.
With his films often packed to bursting with self-referential and deprecating humor, Smith is showing that he’s not taking the criticism he’s receiving too seriously. While he has already indicated that He-Man does indeed feature heavily in the second half of the series, he has confirmed he did not intentionally set out to provoke fans or “upset anybody” and is a little baffled by some of the accusations being thrown his way. Nonetheless, Smith is no stranger to courting controversy from fans and seems to be taking the backlash in stride while working on Clerks III.
