10 Classic Chick Flicks To Watch And What Kind of Girls' Night They'll Give You

Everybody knows that there are a few different things you need for the perfect girls' night: comfy clothes, ice cream, salty snacks, maybe some wine, and definitely the perfect chick flick to set the mood. But there are many different kinds of chick flicks out there, and the one you pick will set the tone for your entire night.

Are you looking to throwback to the good ole days and forget your troubles? To dive headfirst into cheesy, sappy romance? Or is it more of a 'girl power - who needs men' kind of evening? To help you out in your decision making here's a list of 10 classic chick flicks, and what kind of girls' night they'll give you if you watch them. Choose wisely, and have a great night together!

10 Pride And Prejudice

If you and your girls are feeling refined and elegant, the 2005 version of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, starring Kiera Knightly and Matthew Macfayden, is the girls' night chick flick you should reach for. It's got regency-era style and passionate romance, all overlaid with painfully stringent British repression.

It's the perfect film to fill your hearts with pangs of love and longing, so if you and your girls are ready to pop the rosé and lounge about, appreciating a great piece of literature, this film is the move for you.

9 A Cinderella Story

If you're feeling like a fairytale but also missing all of the old familiar tropes of high school social groups, you and your ladies should give A Cinderella Story, with Hilary Duff and Chad Michael Murray, a try for your next movie night.

It's got a spunky Cinderella, a misunderstood (and smoldering hot) Prince Charming, too-cool popular divas, and goofy step-family to boot. Plus, it's a bit of 2000s nostalgia that only gets more quaint and funny with age. This is the perfect movie if you're feeling a little nostalgic, a little romantic, and a little silly.

8 Twilight

It is a truth universally acknowledged that, even if you did like the Twilight books when you were a teen, the movies were pretty terrible. But thankfully, that's exactly what makes them fun now.

If your girls' night is about feeling the schadenfreude and sarcasm, any one of the Twilight movies is the perfect thing to whip out. You can get that same 2000s nostalgia, but revel in the fact that even the actors in the movie thought it was ridiculous.

7 The Princess Diaries

If you've been itching with the desire to become a princess, look no further for your girls' night chick flick selection than The Princess Diaries, starring then-brand-new actress Anne Hathaway. This is the perfect real-world-meets-fairytale film, as the heroine goes from awkward, San Fransisco teen to princess-in-training. And as she does, the movie slowly moves from the realistic to the fantastical.

The Princess Diaries is perfect for ladies wanting to escape the monotony of everyday life for a moment. If you want to believe for a little while that you, too, could be a princess, this is what you ought to watch.

6 The Princess Diaries 2

Yes, this is just the sequel to the last movie, but The Princess Diaries 2 gives off a very different vibe than its predecessor. Set in Genovia years later, the now-adult Princess Mia is poised to take over the charming, pan-European country of Genovia, but she runs into a few snags along the way.

A fantasy movie about a clumsy, relatable princess caught between the man she is supposed to marry and the one she wants to be with and duty to her country and herself is a fun mixture of girl power and steamy romance that is pure, unadulterated, classic girls' night material. You need look no further than the slumber party scene right in the middle of the movie to know what kind of night will result.

5 Legally Blonde

If you're feeling the girl power and don't need romance to feature prominently in the movie you put on, Legally Blonde is a no-brainer. Watching an underestimated young woman pull herself out of a bad breakup and surpass everybody's expectations of her? Yes, please.

Elle Woods is exactly the hero a girl needs for the post-breakup blues, too, so if one of your friends is going through some stuff right now, this movie is double perfect.

4 Mean Girls

This is the perfect movie for if you're missing high school, but not so much the romance part of it. Mean Girls is a movie about high school politics - romance is just a subplot.

If you and your gals have been feeling like you need to see somebody get their just desserts, watching Regina George's social hierarchy fall apart should do the trick. Laugh your head off, quote the movie as you go, and enjoy a throwback to a (sort of) simpler time.

3 Enchanted

If you and your crew are the type who dream of a girls' trip to Disney World and can appreciate a good singalong, Enchanted with Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, and James Marsden is a no-brainer. It's like watching one of those classic Disney Princess movies, but a little more grown-up. It leans into all the Disney stereotypes, all the while poking fun at itself for doing so.

If you've been feeling a little downtrodden and tired of the "real world" (or just want to sing your hearts out) you and your girl group should put on Enchanted and let the night "enchant" you.

2 The Notebook

If you and your girls need a good, cathartic cry, look no further than The Notebook. It's the perfect mix of old-school romance, slow-burn pining, and sweet, undying love that will make your heart swell. The ending may be a tearjerker, but it's sad in a bittersweet, romantic sort of way that will leave your heart feeling fuller, rather than hollow, once it's over.

If one of your girls has had a heartbreak and needs to be reminded what real love looks like, The Notebook will remind her (and all of you) of just this.

1 Mamma Mia

Are you feeling like the singalong, the silliness, but not so much the Disney fairytale of it all? Look no further for your next girls' night chick flick than Mamma Mia, a musical movie starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgard (to name a few). The plot may not make too much sense, but does it really matter in a movie chock full of hot guys and, more importantly, ABBA songs?

Regardless of how invested you are, there's still something very sweet in watching Donna reconnect with old loves, and seeing Sophie find not one, but three dads. The whole movie itself is like an extended girls' night on a beach, so if you and your ladies are looking for a night of pure fun, singing, and dancing along to your screen, give Mamma Mia a try.
