It’s possible that The Walking Dead season 10 finale will directly set up Walking Dead: World Beyond, the new spinoff series. The upcoming season finale and the World Beyond series premiere were originally set to air on the same night back in April, but due to production delays caused by the coronavirus, they’ve been pushed all the way back to October 4th, 2020.
World Beyond is the third series in The Walking Dead universe, and it jumps to 10 years after the zombie apocalypse; that puts it at the same time period as the flagship series, but it'll instead be centered a whole new cast of characters. This show will focus on a group of teenagers struggling to survive in a world filled with zombies. World Beyond has been described as a coming-of-age story, as the events that take place in the upcoming AMC series will shape these teenagers’ futures. Their problems are further complicated by the presence of the powerful and mysterious organization known as CRM (Civic Republic Military), which has been featured sparingly in the other two Walking Dead shows. CRM consists of three different communities, with the one in Nebraska being the setting of World Beyond.
World Beyond could have a connection of some sort to the long-delayed Walking Dead season 10 finale, which will be introducing another massive organization in the Walking Dead universe: the Commonwealth. Several big stories will be playing out in the finale, which will encompass the return of Maggie (Lauren Cohan), the final battle with Beta (Ryan Hurst) and the Whisperers, and the first in-person meeting between the main characters and representatives from the Commonwealth, a group that Eugene made contact with earlier in season 10. While the finale is sure to have a lot going on, it may still have time to sneak in a connection to World Beyond. Here’s how the episode could set up the spinoff.
World Beyond expands the CRM story that was first established in The Walking Dead and later built upon in Fear The Walking Dead season 5. After including numerous sightings of a black helicopter marked with the letters “CRM” and playing up an ambiguous connection to Jadis (Pollyanne McIntosh), The Walking Dead season 9 elevated this CRM organization to an important role by having Jadis save Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) from the brink of death at the last minute.
In the final scene of Rick’s last episode, the black helicopter flew away with Rick, leaving everyone back at Alexandria, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom to believe that he had perished in the explosion on the bridge. Fear the Walking Dead officially introduced a member of CRM when Althea (Maggie Grace) encountered another black helicopter and met Isabelle (Sydney Lemmon). There, viewers learned more about CRM through Isabelle and were able to gain at least a limited understanding of what they want. It was discovered that CRM is looking to rebuild society to some degree.
So far, CRM has only had a small amount of exposure in the Walking Dead universe, but all of that is about to change when World Beyond premieres. With CRM being a major part of the show as opposed to just getting a guest appearance, viewers can expect to learn more about their origins, their goals, and whether or not they should be classified as villains. What World Beyond reveals about the CRM is important for the franchise, because it can help answer what is perhaps the most important question related to The Walking Dead: what do they want with Rick Grimes?
The biggest link between the Walking Dead and World Beyond is, of course, Rick Grimes, but he hasn’t been on the show since season 9, episode 5; that being said, The Walking Dead season 10 finale may still lead into World Beyond. The Commonwealth from the main series and World Beyond’s CRM are two separate groups, but it’s easy to imagine one of them being aware of the other, especially if both are as expansive as they appear to be. After the Commonwealth is introduced, one or more of the characters associated with the organization could have a conversation pertaining to another community that’s gaining in power. People from the Commonwealth could discuss the possibility of CRM being a potential threat to them. The black helicopter could be even directly referenced in an effort to make the identity of the group they’re talking about blatantly clear.
As for why there would be such a connection present in The Walking Dead season 10 finale, it’s important to point out that the original and current air dates for the finale and World Beyond’s series premiere were back-to-back. The obvious reason for this is to maximize viewership for the spinoff, but there could be a second reason for that. Suppose The Walking Dead season 10 finale does indeed feature a scene – possibly at the end of the episode – that directly relates to World Beyond to CRM. Going in this direction would help AMC create interest surrounding its newest addition to the Walking Dead franchise.
Massive, organized groups of survivors seem to be the future of The Walking Dead universe. The main series has the Commonwealth, Fear the Walking Dead has Virginia (Colbie Minifie) and the Pioneers, and World Beyond has one of the three communities associated with CRM. In season 6 of Fear, Morgan (Lennie James) and his friends will have a season-long struggle ahead of them as they work to reunite with each other after being abducted and divided by the Pioneers, who are busy building encampments everywhere. This story could extend beyond season 6, since getting back together will be their top priority. Defeating Virginia and her people is a challenging task that may be reserved for season 7.
The Walking Dead’s extended season 10 (and season 11) will focus on the final arc from the comics, which is the Commonwealth. Just like Alexandria was in season 5, the Commonwealth will be a game-changer for the main characters. This network of communities – which will come complete with a functioning government -- will bring them into a much larger world that they didn’t know existed, and how they react to it will be explored in the near future.
World Beyond, on the other hand, will provide a proper introduction to CRM, who ties all three shows together. Their role in the show will lead to what may be arguably be the biggest story the franchise has told yet, which is the trilogy of Walking Dead movies with Rick Grimes. After all, every CRM reference in the main show, Michonne’s exit, and Isabelle in Fear the Walking Dead have all felt like precursors to Rick’s story in the movies. What happened to Rick, why he hasn’t come back, and CRM’s interest in him are all mysteries that will, hopefully, be solved soon.
