Vikings: 10 Things That Make No Sense About Bjorn | ScreenRant

Bjorn "Ironside" Ragnarsson is the oldest son of Ragnar Lothbrok on Vikings. He starts out the show just beginning his journey as a Viking man at 12 years old. In the first episode, Ragnar gave him the arm ring that signifies he is part of the tribe and a man, allowed to go raiding.

As the seasons progress, Bjorn grows up fast and he's not the same kid that worshipped his father and wanted to protect his mother. One minute he seems lost and the next his conviction for a plan is unmatched. Every new facet of his growing personality brings up something else that just doesn't make sense.

10 Hate For Athelstan

While raiding in Northumbria, Ragnar comes across a Christian monk named Athelstan. He is fascinated by the monk's beliefs, his demeanor, and the culture of the monastery. Hungry to learn more, Ragnar brings Athelstan back home to Kattegat as a slave.

Once Athelstan has integrated into their lives, Ragnar goes raiding again and leaves Athelstan with Bjorn and Gyda. Bjorn is outraged. He sees Athelstan as below him even though he saw his father respect the monk and attempt to learn from him. It makes no sense for him to react that way when he was previously shown to greatly respect his father. Ever the dutiful son, it would make more sense for him to go along with his father's wishes.

9 Confronted Ragnar About Aslaug

Ragnar and a group of others happen upon Aslaug bathing while traveling between Kattegat and Götaland to resolve a land dispute. She demands an apology for disrupting her bathing and Ragnar offers back a riddle. When she meets all of his conditions in an enticing display, Ragnar can't seem to resist himself.

Young Bjorn is angry with his father for cheating on his mother and confronts him with a fight on his mind and nothing else. He doesn't ask his father for an explanation, just offers blind discourse. For a young man trying to prove himself as a Viking, confronting his father and their tribe's leader makes no sense at all.

8 He Left With Lagertha

Bjorn was very angry that his father chose Aslaug over Lagertha, even though Ragnar did want them both. Lagertha decided to leave Kattegat after this and get officially divorced from Ragnar. The parents tell Bjorn that it's up to him where he wants to go.

He wants to raid and become a great warrior like his father, but he chooses to go with Lagertha, which makes no sense because his father was the one that was training him. Lagertha is a shieldmaiden and a warrior in her own right, but Bjorn showed many times that he wanted to be a warrior like his father.

7 Lets Earl Sigvard Humiliate Him

When Bjorn and Lagertha leave, they find themselves in a new earldom and Lagertha marries Earl Sigvard, who becomes Bjorn's stepfather. Earl Sigvard frequently humiliated Bjorn to the point where he wanted to leave and go to the wilderness to prove himself a man. Ragnar told him to take care of his mother.

His new stepfather abused Lagertha and Bjorn tries to ask that man for permission to leave on an expedition that will elevate his status. That makes absolutely no sense. Bjorn would have abandoned his mother when she needed him most, broken a promise to his father, and sought permission from a man who would never let him elevate his status as a man.

6 Fell For Porunn

Bjorn wants to raid. He wants to be a warrior first and foremost and then travel the world and be a legend like his father. He comes back to Kattegat and falls for a slave girl in no time at all.

After his treatment of Athelstan years ago and his aversion to Aslaug in general, it makes no sense that he'd fall for a slave. It also makes no sense that he'd fall in love at all when he wants to become a great warrior and travel the world. A romantic relationship is a distraction, to say the least.

5  Cheated With Torvi

Bjorn married Porunn. During a battle, Porunn was injured and left with a large and ugly scar on her face. She hated it and even though Bjorn took care of her while she was pregnant with his child, she still pushed him away.

Bjorn connected with Torvi, who was also married to someone else. He cheated on Porunn with Torvi and didn't look back. Considering how much he hated his father's actions with Aslaug and what happened to Lagertha with Earl Sigvard, it makes no sense that Bjorn wouldn't stand by his injured wife or that he'd cheat with a woman who was also married.

4 Kept Ragnar's Secret About Being Dead

Ragnar tricks the Parisians into letting the Vikings into their walls by letting everyone believe that he was dead. He was baptized before he "died" and asked that he be granted a proper Christian funeral. Bjorn knew the secret that he wasn't really dead and he kept it, even though he knew it would hurt his mother and other people he loved.

As a child, he worshipped his father but when he came back after years away, much more a man, he made it clear that he wanted to be his own person. It makes no sense that his response to the anger of his family at keeping this secret was, "I was only obeying my father's wishes."

3 Actually Leaves For The Wilderness

After the big display of loyalty to his father, Bjorn ignores his disagreement and goes off to the wilderness to prove his manhood. In doing so, he abandons his young daughter for Aslaug to care for. He never liked Aslaug and leaves his only daughter with her, knowing that his ailing wife couldn't care for her and left as well.

Porunn is off somewhere he doesn't know, depressed and scarred. Bjorn's daughter Siggy has no one else and he leaves for the wilderness. To abandon his family against the wishes of the father he just stood up for at great personal cost makes no sense at all.

2 Sought Peace With Ivar

Bjorn is at war with his half brother Ivar for many years. Ivar is determined to kill Lagertha in revenge for her killing Aslaugh, Ivar's mother. Bjorn saw Ivar's brutality and knew he was insane. He heard other tales of Ivar's actions and knew that there was no limit to what he would do to get his way.

Bjorn, a seasoned warrior and leader, then sought peace with Ivar. It makes no sense that he would take that route when he knew who Ivar was and knew how to go after him in battle.

1 Participated In The Election For King Of Norway

Bjorn has led armies and he had an amazing idea to make contracts with other areas for trade when he became king in Kattegat, but he was always an adventurer and a warrior first and foremost. As king, he'd still be able to raid but he'd also have to be king. He'd have to be home in Norway for a good deal of his time in order to do the job well.

This is not in Bjorn's character. He has shown that he wants to go to the ends of the Earth and learn all there is about what's out there. It makes no sense for him to vie for a kingship that would keep him in one place.
