Sex & The City Meets Devil Wears Prada in 'Sweet Paprika' Preview

Mirka Andolfo's cross-media project Sweet Paprika will be a 12-issue comic book miniseries featuring a romance between a workaholic devil and a strange angel. It has been described previously by publisher Image Comics as a combination of works like Bridget Jones's DiarySex and the City, and The Devil Wears Prada. The book is being produced by the Italian media company Arcancia Studio, which has been part of other projects from Andolfo like Deep Beyond.

An international bestselling writer, Andolfo has a long line of comic book credits, which include Commanders in CrisisUnnaturalMercy, and Hex Wives, to name a few. She will be handling both the writing and artwork in the Sweet Paprika series. In addition to being in the comic book format, Sweet Paprika is being developed into an animated project by Grey Ladder Productions, Arancia Studio, and Wild Sheep Content. The director of the animation will be Emmy Award-winner Gabriele Pennacchioli (Love, Death & Robots).

An official preview of Sweet Paprika #1 released by Image Comics along with the reveal of the three covers for the first issue. Andolfo will be doing two variant covers, as well as three of the incentive covers, which are special variants retailers get for ordering a certain number of books. Artgerm, who has created numerous beautiful variant covers, will be doing a variant cover, which will also have a virgin (no logo) version. Lastly, Peah Momoka, who has developed lovely anime-inspired Marvel variants, will be providing the art for a variant cover as well as an incentive cover. Readers can also get a special pink sketch cover. The complete preview and covers by Andolfo, Artgerm, and Momoko are below.

Sweet Paprika introduces readers to the titular Paprika, who comes off as anything but "sweet" in the preview. Described as a workaholic and one of the most famous CCO's in the publishing industry, Paprika keeps her vulnerable side hidden while putting up a hard exterior, preventing her from having meaningful relationships. She's had her heart broken in the past, but a strange angel named Dill may just bring down her defenses. Andolfo shared her love for the series as well: “I’m used to being both thrilled and impatient for the launch of each new series of mine, but with Sweet Paprika I am really elated and proud. It is a project I’m very attached to, and that has led me to mix more reflective elements with funny and sexy situations typical of comedies."

All the covers are striking and the preview captures the comic book and manga style the series seems to be going for. Every character, no matter how important to the plot, is so expressive, and the colors really serve to highlight the yin and yang qualities between Paprika and Dill. Based on the preview, the miniseries doesn't hold back from using more mature humor to get its points across and establishes the uphill battle of the CCO and delivery boy getting together. The chemistry is already rather steamy from just a few preview pages between Dill and just about everyone. Plus if readers weren't already sold, the preview throws in a cute little dog. The first issue of Sweet Paprika will be published first in Italy by Star Comics in May 2021 before being released by Image Comics in the States in comic book stores on July 28, 2021, as well as in Argentina, Chile, France, Spain, and Turkey.
