Who is Red X? Teen Titans Academy’s Prime Suspect | Screen Rant

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Teen Titans Academy #2

In the latest issue of DC Comics' Teen Titans Academy, a prime suspect has been discovered in the ongoing mystery as to who the new Red X might be. As the original Titans have been teaching their first class of students, one of the young heroes has determined to wear the mask and take on the Red X identity that once belonged to Dick Grayson, and recent events are zeroing in on one student in particular: Matt Price.

An old identity of Nightwing's, Red X was a villainous cover persona that almost overwhelmed Dick Grayson, but he thankfully had his fellow Teen Titans to help bring him back to the light. While Red X was originally a concept that came from the animated Teen Titans series, it's now become a part of Nightwing's past in the comics thanks to writer Tim Sheridan and artist Rafa Sandoval. Now, a student has somehow found Dick's old mask, electing to bring back Red X while also working in the shadows towards some as of yet unknown goal.

In any case, Teen Titans Academy #2 by Sheridan and Sandoval seems to be leading readers to assume that Matt Price is the new Red X. While Red X tells the speedster Bolt that he's always three moves ahead, Matt Price is later seen playing arimaa, an advanced version of chess as he has become bored by the original game. When Cyborg asks to learn more about Matt's origins, he reveals that he apparently fell out of the sky and was rescued by the U.S.S Eisenhower, unable to remember anything prior to be rescued, which is very mysterious and could serve to be a misdirect. Matt later excuses himself from class, only for Red X to be discovered by Nightwing moments later downloading something from the Titans' command center. Not only that, but Matt and Bolt seem to be working together in secret, indicating that Bolt may know that he's indeed the new Red X.

After Red X manages to escape the pursuing Nightwing, the Titans call an all-school assembly...and both Bolt and Matt show up late. While Bolt is dealing with the Suicide Squad trying to get their hands on her, it's possible that she may find a new ally in Red X to help, though his true motivations remain to be seen. In any case, the issue is certainly leading readers to believe that Matt is the one underneath the mask, though it should be noted that his grave was seen at Titans Tower during the events of Teen Titans: Future State, while Red X was still in operation working alongside Nightwing. However, DC has made it clear that the future that was seen is not set in stone, so the present-day Titans could be headed down a divergent path as well.

Regardless of whether or not Red X is Matt Price (or another student entirely), the true identity isn't going to be nearly as interesting as learning the why. Why would a young student want to revive what's essentially old Titans history, and how would they even known about that chapter of Nightwing's past? How did they get the mask in the first place? While it's possible that this new Red X is working as an infiltrator for Slade Wilson given Deathstroke's connection to Red X, that's just conjecture at the moment. However it all plays out, it seems as though Teen Titans Academy fans won't have to wait long to learn who's really behind the Red X mask in future issues from DC Comics.
