Warning: SPOILERS for Shadow and Bone season 1 ahead.
The first season of Shadow and Bone ended with Matthias believing Nina had betrayed him, but he will he trust her again when they are thrown together in season 2? Nina Zenik and Matthias Helvar were introduced as natural enemies, a Heartrender Grisha and a Drüskelle witch hunter taking her back to Fjerda for trial and execution. However, when the ship carrying them to Fjerda sank, they had to band together to survive and began to trust each other. Their story ended with a betrayal of that trust, but Matthias may soon be forced to rely on Nina again.
After Nina and Matthias escaped the icy wasteland and found their way back to Ravka, the Grisha Second Army caught up with Nina and planned to kill Matthias for his crimes against the Grisha as a Drüskelle. Nina took the only way out she saw, accusing Matthias of being a slaver in front of a Kerch slaver-hunter. Matthias was arrested and taken back to Ketterdam to await trial in Hellgate Prison. Nina followed him to Ketterdam and ran into Kaz Brekker and the Crows on the boat, setting in motion another story that will force Nina and Matthias back together.
Now that Nina is set up to join the Crows, the next season is likely to cover the plot of the book Six of Crows, where the Crows are hired for a heist of the Fjerdan Ice Court, the seat of nobility and base of the Drüskelle. For a job this risky, Kaz will need not only Nina’s skills as a Heartrender, but also Matthias’ intimate knowledge of the Ice Court where he was trained. The Crows’ next story will see Nina and Matthias joining the Crows together, forcing them to cooperate with each other again to pull off the score of a lifetime.
Bringing Matthias back to the Ice Court after the time he spent with Nina will also force him to confront his past as a Drüskelle, the very reason they were enemies in the first place. He is essentially going back home to the place where he was indoctrinated from childhood to hate and fear the Grisha, but now he has doubts about whether the Drüskelle are right. Granted, Nina's seeming betrayal of him that landed him in jail has set him back in this progress, but it's not the last of Matthias or the end of his evolution.
Matthias and Nina will have to trust each other enough to work together again or the heist will end in disaster and they'll all forfeit the rewards they hope for. However, Matthias will also have the chance to confront his deeper mistrust of Nina as a Grisha when he returns to the Ice Court. If the Netflix series follows the books and the story the end of season 1 has appeared to set up, Nina and Matthias have a much longer and more complicated story ahead of them in the next season of Shadow and Bone.
