Spoilers ahead for Avengers Annual #1!
Of all the Infinity Stones, there is one Iron Man fears the most: the Soul Stone. In Avengers Annual #1, on sale now in print and digital, Iron Man and Captain America, on the trail of the Stone Bearers, track the Soul Stone to a roadside café in the Midwest. On the way, Iron Man lets slip his thoughts on all of the Stones, but the Soul One in particular.
Avengers Annual #1 is the final installment in the Infinite Destinies storyline that has been weaving its way through this year’s annuals. Adam Warlock, seeking to bring an end to the misery caused by the Infinity Stones, bonded them to individuals, called the Stone Bearers. So far, Spider-Man has tangled with Star, in possession of the Reality Stone, and the Guardians of the Galaxy met the He-Man knockoff Prince of Power, who as the name suggests, derives his strength from the Power Stone. All of the Stones have been accounted for so far, except for one: the Soul Stone. Arguably the most powerful of the Stones, readers have yet to meet the Stone Bearer bonded to it—until now. Avengers Annual #1 is by Jed MacKay, Travel Foreman, Jim Campbell, and Cory Petit.
Inside Avengers Mountain, Iron Man and Captain America are reviewing the Stone Bearers found so far. As they run through the list, Captain America realizes the Soul Stone is still out there, and Iron Man confesses the Soul Stone “keeps [him] up at night.” Iron Man goes on to explain that the other stones grant powers that he and the Avengers can account for; teleportation, super strength, and time travel. The Soul Stone, which gives power over souls, frightens him. Iron Man wonders what that power even looks like. Readers learn the Soul Stone has been bonded to a synthetic person, a robot essentially, created without a soul. Captain America and Iron Man are alerted to the Soul Stone’s presence and take off after it.
Iron Man is a scientist at his core, and the other five Infinity Stones, such as Time, Power, Space, Reality, and Mind deal in universal concepts that science can rationalize and explain to a degree. However, the Soul Stone is metaphysical, outside of the realm of conventional science. It is almost magic. The fact that Iron Man cannot readily wrap his brains around it gives him pause. However, his fear is well-placed. The synthetic person, eventually calling itself the Multitude, wields fantastic powers and causes much destruction. There is, however, the promise that the Soul Stone will be used for good in the Multitude’s hands, but it is still up in the air.
Given his many battles with Thanos and others who would misuse the Stones, Iron Man has seen how powerful the Infinity Stones are on several occasions, and the awesome power of the Soul Stone still scares him to this day.
