The Best Emblematic Districts in Humankind and How to Build Them

In Humankind, players can build different Emblematic Districts depending on the culture they pick, and some are particularly strong. Emblematic Districts are unique architecture that represents the culture it was built by. Every playable culture has one district only they can build, such as the Egyptian pyramids or the Japanese Robotics Lab. Each provides unique benefits to their city and will remain long after the culture that built them has evolved, provided they haven’t been destroyed in a war.

Some Emblematic Districts in Humankind are better choices than others. Here are some of the most powerful Emblematic Districts of each era in Humankind that will help players on their quest to earn the most fame and win the game.

Emblematic Districts don’t require any technology to unlock. Instead, players can start building them the same turn they adopt the culture from which the Emblematic District comes. However, unlike other city extensions, Emblematic Districts can only be built once in a city. Further, they can no longer be built after a new culture is adopted in the next era.

Canal Network

If players manage to claim the Harappans before the AI does, they’ll gain access to this strong Ancient Era district. This canal system can help build up population early with their high food yields: they gain +3 outright, +3 more for every adjacent farmers quarter, and an additional farmers slot for the city. More population means more army units for war, as well as several other benefits.

Cothon

Players have a limited amount of land they can use to place districts in their city, but the Cothon can be built on the sea. The Carthaginian Emblematic District, the Cothon, provides district fortification like a fort. However, the true strength of this seafaring people’s uniquely shaped harbors comes from the bonus industry they gain for each adjacent water tile. This adjacency bonus is very easy to satisfy in coastal cities, making them more productive.

Baray

The Barays, unique to the Khmer people, provide more than one type of yield: +5 food for simply being built, +1 industry for each population, and +2 industry for every adjacent river tile. Players who have many cities built along rivers will make the most of this phenomenal reservoir system.

V.O.C Warehouse

Inspired by the Dutch East India Company, this massive warehouse grants a lot of wealth to the culture that builds it. It grants +2 money for every trader and another trader slot in its city. Its real strength lies in its easy-to-satisfy adjacency bonus: +20 gold for adjacent harbors. While multiple harbors cannot be built in the same city, harbors from neighboring territories will also work. Further, Emblematic Districts that act as harbors, such as the Haven, Cothon, and Naust, will also work too, making the Dutch a solid pick for players who have already built those districts.

Teatro

This Italian theater gains additional influence for each commons quarter built next to it, and, given the Italians who build it obtain more influence from commons quarters, it’s a match made in heaven. Teatro also provides +1 influence for every trader or researcher in the city. This means players who have focused on science, commerce, or both throughout the game can earn lots of influence at once by building Teatro.

Public Schools

Lastly, the contemporary era Turks can create Public Schools in their territory. Though they have an agrarian affinity, their Emblematic District advances research by providing +1 science per population in the city and an additional researchers slot. This is already powerful given their agricultural leanings, but it also gains a whopping 300% more science for each adjacent research quarter. Combine this with cultures that also have science-centric emblematic districts, like the Seowon or Exhibition Hall, and the Turks will unlock the late-game technologies in no time.
