Even celebrities have to pay their dues in the film industry, as Courteney Cox demonstrated when she grabbed coffee for fans at Central Perk in between filming scenes for her new Starz show Shining Vale. Cox is best known for playing the neurotic Monica Geller on Friends from 1994 to 2004, a role that won her international recognition. The fanbase for Friends has continued to expand since it aired its widely viewed series finale 17 years ago, due to the show's frequent reruns on cable TV and presence on multiple streaming platforms.
All six members of the gang, including Cox, got back together for a reunion special that recently aired on HBO Max, the show's current host platform, on May 27. The special received mixed but mostly positive reviews from critics and raves from fans. Since starring on Friends, Cox moved on to act as the lead on the sitcom Cougar Town from 2009 to 2015. Up next, Cox is set to star beside Greg Kinnear in Shining Vale, a horror-comedy created by Sharon Horgan (Catastrophe, Divorce) and Jeff Astrof for Starz. As it happens, the show is filming on the same Warner Bros. studio lot where much of Friends was filmed.
In between shooting scenes for the Starz project, Cox popped around the corner to Central Perk for a walk down memory lane that she posted on Instagram. Located on the Warner Bros. lot, the shop is a studio set and working replica of the cafe where Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) served coffee to Monica and the others on the show. The Friends actress seized the opportunity to surprise patrons with a cameo at her old haunt, which surely made some fans' days. Watch the video below:
In the video, Cox asks a crew member when her next scene is. When they inform her that she has an hour before she's due back on set, the actress-turned-barista hops over to her second job to clock in at Central Perk. She works behind the gift kiosk, at the parking station, and on the floor, where she serves customers drinks named after the character she played. It's a strange sight to watch "Monica Geller" serving customers sitting in the same seats she used to occupy years ago, although Monica would likely also try to use her spare hour productively. This isn't the first time Cox has taken a second job on set: while filming Shining Vale in August, she gave fans a tour of the lot on a golf cart.
Although Cox clearly can't resist the nostalgic potential presented by returning to her old workplace, the video also draws attention to her new project. Shining Vale has plenty to be excited about, beginning with creator Sharon Horgan's track record of writing excellent comedies. Its enticing horror-comedy premise involves cheating, possession, depression, and an unwritten novel. Cox and Kinnear are joined by a great cast that includes Sherilynn Fenn (Twin Peaks) and Mira Sorvino (Impeachment: American Crime Story). Cox will no doubt carry her weight, as she's done some of her best work in the horror-comedy cross-genre as Gale Weathers in the Scream movie series.
