Writer and director James Gunn has shared concept art for Harley Quinn’s costumes in The Suicide Squad. Best known for his work on the MCU’s Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, Gunn recently brought his comic book sensibilities to the DCEU. In the R-rated The Suicide Squad, Margot Robbie reprises her role of Harley from 2016’s Suicide Squad. Despite the first film's mixed reception, Robbie’s portrayal of the Joker’s psychiatrist-turned-lover has made Harley one of the DCEU’s most popular characters, leading to a solo film, Birds of Prey, in 2020.
As a spiritual sequel to both David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad sees Harley as a returning member of Task Force X alongside Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman) and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney). They are joined by newcomers including Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior), King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), and Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian) — all of whom are dispatched by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) on a deadly mission to the island of Corto Maltese. Gunn’s film is both faithful to the unpredictability of John Ostrander’s comic and the character of Harley Quinn.
Gunn recently took to Twitter to share concept art for Harley Quinn’s costumes in The Suicide Squad. Drawn by artist Christian Cordella for costume designer Judianna Makovsky, the post features some of the first designs for Harley’s dress in the film and her uniform worn at the beginning. As seen below, Harley was originally going to sport a hairstyle similar to the one in Ayer's Suicide Squad, but Gunn and his team ultimate decided on a slightly different red and black look. Gunn has said one of the first things he was asked when being hired for The Suicide Squad was “what is Margot going to wear?” In Batman: The Animated Series and subsequent early depictions, Harley wore a red and black jester costume, which is why the character usually has a red and black wardrobe. The jester costume was featured in a flashback in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. However, the “Daddy’s Lil Monster” tee in that film and outfits worn in Birds of Prey arguably aren’t as faithful as her leather ensemble (which reads “Live Fast, Die Clown” on the back) and pageant dress in Gunn's film.
After stabbing a javelin into the eye of a giant starfish, Harley comes out the other side of The Suicide Squad a little more heroic and a little more crazy. As the DCEU evolves and the animated Harley Quinn series airs its new season, fans will surely see more iterations of the character. Gunn’s upcoming Peacemaker spinoff on HBO Max as well as other teased projects should allow Robbie to continue playing Harley in a t-shirt, jean shorts, leather, red dress, or dressed as a jester. That being said, Harley Quinn remains one the most popular cosplay/Halloween costumes, so no doubt fans will continue to create their own takes on the character for years to come.
