Apple's iOS 14's Power Reserve Mode & Other Cool Features People Are Talking About

Some aspects of Apple's new iPhone update, like the repurposed Power Reserve, have people across the internet talking. Now that more iPhone owners have had hands-on time with the iOS 14 beta, opinions from regular users have reached critical mass, and we're able to see what appeals to people the most. The update is still incomplete and hasn't seen a full release, but the beta is available to anyone who wants it, and who has an iPhone at least as recent as the iPhone 6s.

iOS 14 has a massive list of new features. There's brand new (to Apple phones, at least) stuff like App Clips, as well as smart changes to the process of using an iPhone like the fact that Siri no longer occupies the entire screen when you summon her. But there are also flashier features included with iOS 14 that will immediately impact the iPhone user experience. Things like the much-needed changes to widgets and the App Library will change how iPhone home screens look forever.

One unexpected change coming with iOS 14 is the expansion of Power Reserve. The idea behind this feature, when it was introduced to iOS years ago, was that people would be able to use certain NFC functions of their iPhones even after the battery died. For example, in some train stations, iPhones can be used to replace transit passes. If the phone is off or dead, it'll still perform those tasks for up to five hours. With iOS 14, Power Reserve will work for the new digital car keys, so you can leave your home with nothing but a dead iPhone and still unlock and start a vehicle.

As people dig into the public beta, a few of the new iOS 14 features have been a huge hit with iPhone fans. As expected, people are amazed at the options "real" widgets bring to their devices. Now, widgets can be resized and share much more information, so the calendar widget, specifically, is one of the update's stars.

The other heroes in iOS 14 come from Apple finally making the jump to picture-in-picture information. Video content, such as YouTube Premium videos, will continue playing in a small screen if you back out while watching, but that's not the biggest part. Most Twitter users are amazed at the way iOS 14 handles incoming calls: by popping up a tiny window with the caller's information and options to answer or ignore. These PIP options make iPhones significantly more convenient to use and should make iOS 14 the kind of update that gives people that "I can't go back" feeling.
