MCU: 5 Times We Felt Bad For Captain America (& 5 Times We Hated Him)

Steve Rogers, perhaps better known as Captain America, is one of the most enduring characters in the Marvel universe. Fans have adored him for decades as the morally upstanding figure he is, and Chris Evans' beloved take on the character has charmed moviegoers since his debut in the MCU nearly a decade ago.

He has been through some of the worst hardships of all the Avengers. He was taken out of his own timeline, lost all of his friends (multiple times), and nearly gave his life for the cause. Yet despite these hardships and the fact that he is a do-gooder to the nth degree, there were also some times fans downright hated him.

10 Felt Bad: When He Lost Bucky

It was one of the most tragic moments in the early MCU days. Steve gets separated from his best friend Bucky before he goes to war. But then he finds out the terrible news: Bucky's regiment has been captured.

He stages a huge rescue mission to save Bucky and his comrades. But before they can bring everyone home, Bucky falls to his demise. Of course, fans know that isn't the end of their story, but it was horrible to witness.

9 Hated: When He Sacrificed Lives For Bucky

In one of the most infuriating moments in the MCU, Steve let people perish all for Bucky. He said it was on him when Crossbones invokes Bucky in his taunts in Nigeria. Steve dropped his guard and didn't clock the bomb, which resulted in the deaths of innocents.

That isn't even the end of the bloodshed. Steve relentlessly pursues saving Bucky (both to bring back his best friend and possibly atone for losing him decades earlier), but so many people die in the process.

8 Felt Bad: When He "Died"

While moviegoers didn't need to go long without knowing the fate of Captain America, it was still tragic to watch him intentionally put his plane in the snow for the greater good. Although, everyone knows he didn't really die.

It was heartbreaking to hear his conversation with Peggy as they planned a fateful date to go dancing. In the middle of their radio call, Steve crashes the jet and is lodged in the ice for dozens of years.

7 Hated: When He Betrayed Tony

Bucky may be his closest confidante, but Steve and Tony became close while teaming up as Avengers. They got off to a rocky start, to be sure, as Tony accuses Steve of being like a more beloved son to his father Howard.

But they fought alongside one another and practically became the team's co-leaders. So Tony was crushed when Steve turned on him, refusing to sign the Accords, and nearly ending their friendship.

6 Felt Bad: Each Time He Saw Peggy

Steve and Peggy's romance is one for the ages. It was one of the most popular relationships during the first few phases of the MCU, even though technically the bulk of their appearances are apart from one another.

Still, in the modern day, Steve catches many glimpses of Peggy through the movies: when he watches her video about him in Winter Soldier; when he passes through her office in Avengers: Endgameand of course, when he visits her bedside. It was so sad to see them live their lives apart.

5 Hated: When He Kissed Sharon

Steve has eyes for Peggy only (for the most part). But he gives moving on a chance with Sharon, the mysterious agent down the hall who turns out to be Peggy's own niece.

Things get awkward when he kisses her toward the end of Civil War. It looked awkward for them and was certainly awkward for audiences everywhere. Fans hate this relationship, because it's messed up.

4 Felt Bad: When He Was Peggy's Pallbearer

He sees Peggy through the years, but there is no moment more devastating than when Steve gets the news of her death. He silently leaves the meeting of the Avengers and flies to London.

It cuts to Steve carrying her casket alongside other men as he fights back tears. Natasha even shows up to provide emotional support, because Steve has to reckon with losing the love of his life.

3 Hated: When He Went Back In Time

It infuriated fans all over the globe. At the end of Endgame, Steve makes the sacrificial decision to return the Time Stones, thus giving up his present-day life. But it wasn't as sacrificial as it seemed; it was self serving.

He goes back in time and effectively co-opts Peggy's life and character development to marry her. And just as bad, he leaves his best friends, Bucky and Sam, all alone in modern times without him so he can reunite with Peggy, despite all the lengths they have gone to for one another.

2 Felt Bad: When He Had To Pick Between His Friends

It was heart-wrenching to see Steve caught between two sides: Tony and Bucky. They meant the world to him, and he was forced to pick Bucky over Tony. Not only when he refuses to sign the Accords.

The worst moment is when he has to defend Bucky against Tony when Tony finds out Bucky killed the Starks. One can't blame Steve for doing everything he can to protect Bucky, so fans felt awful for him.

1 Hated: When He Didn't Stop Hydra

When Steve went back in time, it was terrible to see him leave behind important friends and basically take Peggy out of the life she was leading. But even worse, it means that Steve went back into the same timeline and clearly did nothing to stop Hydra.

He knew the truth about Hydra and all of the other bad guys they faced along the way, but one can assume he didn't stop them, as the timeline turned out the same way when he reappears to Sam. It's out of character for Captain America to be so self-centered and uncaring.
