Star Wars Prequels Recapped In Full By Josh Gad (As Frozen’s Olaf)

Josh Gad hilariously recaps the entirety of the Star Wars prequel trilogy while in character as Frozen's Olaf. Arriving sixteen years after the conclusion of the original trilogy, the Star Wars prequels told the stories of a young Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) and Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) before he became the villain Darth Vader. This time around, creator George Lucas directed all three films and went all in on his creative vision, leading to some heavily-debated characters and plot points. To this day, the Star Wars prequels remain rather divisive among fans, though some have come to defend them over the years.

On the other side of Disney's media empire stands Frozen and its lovable snowman sidekick Olaf. Gad first voiced the character in the 2013 film, and when that became a major hit, Olaf became a superstar. Gad has since reprised his Olaf for several short films (including last week's Once Upon a Snowman) and 2019's Frozen II, which also featured the gag Gad himself is recreating now. A high point of Frozen II saw Olaf recap the first film in hilariously dramatic fashion.

Gad pledged to recap the entire Star Wars franchise as Olaf if people retweeted one of his messages about voting 10,000 times. When he exceeded his goal (the original tweet currently stands at over 15,000 retweets), Gad began his Star Wars journey with a 7-minute long recap of the three prequel films. Filled with several amusing meta jokes, one has to applaud Gad's commitment.

Whether it's declaring that Jar Jar Binks teaches the heroes that "syntax is only a suggestion." or poking fun at Darth Maul's fate post-getting cut in half ("He will be glued back together and have his revenge across numerous animated series spin-offs."), Gad clearly had a lot of fun coming up with this recap. Even those who might be tiring of Olaf and his perky voice might find this quite amusing. Gad has promised to do the entire Star Wars franchise like this, so fans have the original trilogy to look forward to, as well as Disney's sequels. The latter in particular could be a great one, since it's inspired some intense debates just like the prequels did.

In recent years, the Star Wars prequels have earned some fan goodwill back, but there's still plenty within them that are ripe for teasing. The original films will likely always be regarded as the best, and where the other six films fall will be dependent on one's own opinions. Still, sometimes it's good to remember that at the end of the day, Star Wars is just a film franchise, and they can handle some good-natured ribbing.
