Spoilers for Dark Nights: Death Metal --The Secret Origin #1 ahead!
Superboy-Prime has one of the most unique powers in the DC Universe: every time he punches something, reality becomes distorted. This power first manifested itself during 2005-2006’s Infinite Crisis and was employed to even greater effect in Dark Nights: Death Metal—The Secret Origin #1. A special one-shot issue tying into the Dark Nights: Death Metal event, it is written by Scott Snyder and Geoff Johns, with art by Jerry Ordway, Frances Manapul and Paul Pelletier, among others. It is in stores now.
Superboy-Prime is the sole survivor of Earth-Prime in the original DC Multiverse; Earth-Prime was a stand-in for our Earth, and it was destroyed in the Crisis on Infinite Earths. After the Crisis, Superboy-Prime went with other survivors to a pocket dimension to live out the rest of their lives. While in that dimension two important things happened: Superboy-Prime went mad, feeling he was cheated out of a heroic career; the second was he discovered that when he punched the walls of the pocket dimension, reality was distorted. Characters would come in and out of existence, and whole histories were rewritten. This was used as a device to explain away continuity errors within DC Comics. He has used the power sporadically since, but now it has become the heroes' last hope of survival.
The Batman Who Laughs, supercharged to god-like levels, has destroyed the Multiverse, and as the surviving heroes gather for their last stand, Superboy-Prime, partially motivated by Krypto, decides to take on the Batman Who Laughs as a way of redeeming himself. He starts hitting the Batman Who Laughs as hard as he can, and when he does, reality becomes distorted, causing whole timelines to blink in and out. The constant back and forth distortions are enough to distract the Batman Who Laughs, allowing Superboy-Prime to destroy the 52 evil Earths the Batman Who Laughs created. At issue’s end, Superboy-Prime has redeemed himself, and a new Earth-Prime is his final reward.
When Infinite Crisis was being published, many fans derided Superboy’s reality distorting punches as a cheap way of explaining away continuity errors, but in The Secret Origin it is the one thing that saves all of existence, which is ironic in light of the fact that these punches almost destroyed the universe once before.
Superboy-Prime has been one of the most hated characters in the DC Universe, largely because he holds a mirror up to toxic fans. His reality-distorting punches were another reason fans hated him, but after The Secret Origin, readers get to see this fascinating power used to benefit the universe.
