The FX drama Fargo is one of those shows that’s known for creating fascinating characters that are, in many cases, morally reprehensible yet utterly compelling despite (or because of) that fact. The fourth season is a bit of a departure from earlier seasons in that it’s set further back in the past than the others, in this case, the 1950s, and it doesn’t lean so much into the absurdist humor of its predecessors. That doesn't mean that it doesn't have some great scenes, though, because it certainly does.
Its characters, furthermore, are just as fascinating and, while a few of them are quite likable, far more of them are truly reprehensible.
10 Oraetta Mayfair
On the outside, Oraetta Mayfair is one of those people who is almost too cheerful. She really does seem to believe that she was called to be a nurse, despite the fact that she is directly responsible for the death of several of her patients.
What’s more, there’s a dark and sinister edge to her personality, one that suggests that she’s always one step away from an outburst of rage. And, of course, there’s also the fact that she’s a racist.
9 Calamita
The Fadda crime family is one of the two competing interests in this season and, whatever their failings, they command almost absolute loyalty from their subordinates.
That’s certainly true of Calamita, who is even willing to kill a child at the order of the boss. He’s tall and lean, and there’s a certain intensity to his personality that makes the viewer unable to turn away, even as they can’t help but be horrified at the extreme lengths to which he is willing to go to commit violence.
8 Gaetano
As the younger son of the Fadda family, Gaetano clearly has a bit of a chip on his shoulder, and for much of the season, he competes with his brother Josto for control of the family and its future. He’s a brutal sort of person, one who’s more than willing to shoot a waiter because he wasn’t sweeping the floor energetically enough and served him weak coffee (it's one of the scariest scenes of the season).
He’s sublimely unpleasant, and his negative personality is reflected in the way that he commits violence without much thought for the consequence.
7 Josto
From the moment that he appears, Josto makes it clear that he’s not a very pleasant person. He seems to have a bit of an inferiority complex, and this leads him to be a very ineffective leader of the Fadda family.
In fact, some of his actions (if not almost all of them) end up blowing up in his face. Though he’s something of a foolish figure and not the brightest villain, that shouldn’t deceive people into thinking that he’s in any way likable, since he’s capable of ordering the death of a child without a second thought.
6 Odis Weff
Another rather foolish character is Odis Weff, the corrupt cop who is in the pocket of the Fadda family. He has numerous nervous tics, most of which are the result of trauma from the War.
However, despite all of this, he’s still not a very nice nor likable person, and he is quite capable of committing acts of horrific violence. He even ends up betraying the Fadda family, though even this ends up blowing up in his face when he is killed by Gaetano.
5 Dick Wickware
Dick Wickware, the Mormom US marshal, is one of those characters that could only appear in this show. It’s quite hard to see where, exactly, his true loyalties lie, though it seems pretty clear that he does take his job as a marshal pretty seriously.
He’s a likable enough guy, with a fair amount of charm and charisma (he is played by Timothy Olyphant, after all). He definitely deserves a lot more than the ignoble death that he receives when Odis betrays him.
4 Loy
Chris Rock is definitely one of the highlights of this season, and he emerges as a man of many depths. While he has a lighter side and is very loyal to his family, he is also, as befits a crime boss, quite capable of cruel and violent acts.
For all of that, he doesn’t seem to be a truly bad person and, given that he is played by Chris Rock, he emerges as one of the season’s more likable characters (not that that’s saying much, all things considered).
3 Doctor Senator
Doctor Senator is one of the most brilliant creations of this season, and he is key to the success of Loy’s crime family and its ambitions. He’s a very likable sort of person, and he genuinely seems to want to help his boss realize his ambitions.
Unfortunately, he doesn’t make it to the end of the season, but in the time that he is on the screen, he shows himself to be a man with a lot of wisdom and charm, so his death is particularly jarring and sad.
2 Patrick Milligan
Patrick Milligan is a member of the Fadda crime family, though he was actually born into an opposing (and Irish) crime family before he betrayed them to their death.
However, it becomes apparent throughout the season that he’s not one to let his loyalty to the Faddas get in the way of his adherence to his own moral code, which is what allows him to run away and save Loy’s son from the death that would almost certainly have come to him were it not for his timely intervention. He was definitely one of those who didn't deserve to die.
1 Ethelrida
Ethelrida is one of this season’s more enigmatic characters, but she’s also one of the few that seems to have any sort of a moral compass or sense of what’s right and what isn’t.
She’s the one, for example, who helps bring about Oraetta’s downfall, and she’s also quite smart. She shows that she’s also quite a likable young woman, even if it seems at times that those in her life, particularly the people who work at her school, don’t appreciate her nearly as much as they should.
