The newest Monster Hunter trailer is jam-packed with various monsters and side quests, stepping away from the previous international trailer that focused more on the film’s actual plot and characters. After Sony changed the release date a handful of times, the company announced that the video game adaptation would hit American theaters early in December 2020, most likely due to the film being pulled from circulation in China after the backlash of a racist joke.
In the trailer, released by Sony Pictures, Milla Jovovich plays a U.S. Army Ranger, Natalie Artemis, who goes through a portal and ends up in a desert world filled with giant, bloodthirsty monsters. She teams up with a local known as The Hunter, played by Tony Jaa, in order to find a way back home. The two are shown fighting monsters that are sometimes as large as elephants and whales but are as ferocious as the tyrannosaurus rex from Jurassic Park. As a whole, it comes off as very video game-like, displaying the action-packed set pieces only, interjecting a scene where The Hunter acts out to Artemis how they can take down a monster using another monster.
While the trailer displays the film’s unexpected cinematography and incredible CGI-monsters, it seems to be a little lackluster for the final trailer before the film’s release. While video games can solely be about action and the monsters that will be hunted, the more general audience will be expecting character development and meaningful dialogue that will build a larger fanbase outside of the gaming world. However, if the film was made solely for fan service and is attempting to be exactly like the video game, Monster Hunter might be a video game adaptation viewers can look forward to.
