Magnum P.I. Reboot: 5 Ways That Magnum & Higgins Belong Together (& 5 They Don't)

The reboot of Magnum P.I. is already on its third season. In the original series, Magnum and Higgins were more like frenemies than anything else, but ultimately made a good team. In the Magnum P.I. reboot, it's another story, as Higgins and Magnum have am increased sexual tension about them. Higgins often insults or belittles Magnum, though she does care for him and shows it in her own way.

Magnum, as always, is laidback and easygoing, but tends to shirk from responsibilities, like paying rent or taking the Ferrari for a spin whenever he likes. They often bicker not just about their cases but life as well. Could they be the one for one another, or should their partnership remain strictly professional?

10 Do: Both Have Served Their Countries

Magnum, prior to the good life of living in Hawaii on a grand estate with a Ferrari to drive whenever he wants, was a Navy SEAL alongside his best friends, Rick and T.C. Prior to her job as majordomo (and later owner) of Robin's Nest, Higgins worked for MI6 back in England. Both made significant sacrifices for their jobs, and by extension, for their countries.

They may not have had the same experiences, but they can relate in regards to their sense of duty, the hard decisions they had to make, and the people they undoubtedly lost along the way.

9 Don't: They're Happier Dating Other People

Higgins is currently dating the doctor that treated her gunshot wound in the very beginning of the third season. Magnum even offered her helpful advice when she was determined to run a background check on him, despite the fact that she liked him and that her first date with him had gone well.

Magnum, meanwhile, was happy with his former girlfriend, Abby, before she left Hawaii. Both Magnum and Higgins are blind to whatever romantic feelings they may feel for one another, or else refuse to acknowledge it. In which case, it makes sense that they'd be better off with different significant others.

8 Do: Both Tragically Lost Past Loves

Magnum's ex betrayed him and his friends, and he understandably took the betrayal hard, as he'd truly loved Hannah (Jordana Brewster). Elsewhere, Higgins lost the love of her life when he was tragically killed while they were both in MI6.

That said, they've both had their hearts broken, and both struggled with moving on to other relationships. Higgins and Magnum could relate on that level, and work through it together, establishing a new kind of trust and allowing themselves to love again as they once had.

7 Don't: Their Chemistry Is Off

It's been hinted throughout the first three seasons that something has been brewing between Magnum and Higgins. However, it seems to be wrong place, wrong time type of thing, similar to Dean and Jo in Supernatural

Their chemistry seems to come from one or the other, or not at all. Any moments one of them may feel something more for the other appears to go unnoticed by the other person. If neither of them take the step to let the other know how they feel, or fails to see the signals, they're better off as friends.

6 Do: They Balance Each Other Out

Magnum is easygoing, laidback, cheerful, and goes with the flow. Higgins is uptight, a planner, and quite strict, especially with Magnum. Higgins often resents Magnum for not taking responsibility for things, and Higgins can annoy and frustrate Magnum from time to time. However, their different ways somehow balances them out.

It could be like a romantic comedy, in which Magnum teaches Higgins to lighten up, and Higgins inspires Magnum to take on more adult tasks and be more responsible, which could ultimately benefit them both in the long run.

5 Don't: They're Too Opposite

While balancing each other out may work, the flip side of the coin is that they may be too opposite to work at all. If they're too different, they'll have varying ideas about everything from lifestyle to morals to work ethics.

They already do disagree on several matters as it is. Magnum and Higgins are polar opposites, and that could cause more friction than romance in a relationship.

4 Do: They Already Have A Partnership

Even before Magnum and Higgins partnered up in the PI business together professionally, they had an unofficial arrangement anyway. Higgins often did what she could to help Magnum, though it wasn't without plenty of prodding on Magnum's part. In the process, however, the two discovered that they did make a great team, and got the job done, regardless of whatever case Magnum had taken on.

Even in the third season, the two are still taking on cases together; the case may not go exactly as planned, but they both take care of each other and find a way out of whatever mess they've landed in.

3 Don't: They're Usually Bickering

Practically every conversation begins and ends with some form of argument or bickering between Magnum and Higgins. Their constant fighting has to be annoying, not just to them but to those around them.

Magnum does have a great amount of patience, but even his patience has worn thin from time to time. Higgins doesn't have much patience with Magnum to begin with. The bickering, unless things changed, would probably break them up sooner rather than later.

2 Do: They Care For Each Other

Magnum is better at finding ways to show he cares, but he's definitely the guy audiences want by their side in a real emergency. In Season 1, Magnum and Higgins had an especially bad day at sea, leaving Higgins shot and wounded, and both she and Magnum were stuck out at sea, awaiting rescue and fighting to stay alive. He took care of her then, and in a recent episode, he took care of her when she was shot while they were pursuing bad guys in the woods.

Meanwhile, every so often Higgins will give him a compliment, and recently, she made sure that Magnum had his father's watch returned to him after he was forced to pawn it. They may not always be on the same page, but they do care for each other.

1 Don't: Higgins Constantly Belittles Magnum

One of the biggest and most noticeable aspects of their relationship is the fact that Higgins frequently gives Magnum a hard time. It might be about his choices, his lifestyle, or even his approach to cases.

She's been known to underestimate him and to throw him plenty of jabs to boot. That's no way to enter a relationship, and it's certainly not a healthy habit, regardless if the relationship is romantic or not, which probably makes it a better idea that they remain partners professionally, and nothing more.
