The official synopsis for Ms. Marvel teases the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Kamala Khan and her fan fiction writing. Marvel Comics readers have been waiting for the day that Kamala would join the MCU almost immediately after her comic debut in 2013. As a Captain Marvel superfan, a proper introduction for Kamala had to wait until Carol Danvers joined the universe, and Brie Larson finally brought the superhero to life in 2019.
With Carol Danvers firmly established as a powerhouse in the MCU after Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, Marvel Studios confirmed last year that Kamala Khan is coming soon. The Ms. Marvel Disney+ series was added to the Phase 4 slate, and it was recently announced that Iman Vellani landed the coveted role. Fans were already treated to their first look at Iman as Kamala thanks to some early footage released by Marvel. Filming only began a few weeks ago, so the featurette mixed interviews with a few shots from Ms. Marvel.
The footage from Ms. Marvel didn't reveal much in terms of the plot, but Marvel released an official synopsis for the show shortly after. The show will follow Kamala as a 16-year-old Pakistani-American teenager growing up in Jersey City. Thanks to the synopsis, we have more insight into what the MCU's version of Kamala is like. The synopsis reads: "A great student, avid gamer, and voracious fan-fic scribe, Kamala has a special affinity for Super Heroes, particularly Captain Marvel."
Kamala's fandom of superheroes is ripped straight out of the comics, and it has already been on display through official and leaked looks at Ms. Marvel. The footage showed Kamala in a Captain Marvel costume and with a Captain Marvel poster on her wall. Some eagle-eyed viewers even spotted that her shirt seems to include Carol and Valkyrie together. There's no telling what type of fan-fic Kamala writes, but perhaps part of it includes her "shipping" Captain Marvel and Valkyrie.
It might be very early on in Ms. Marvel's production, but it is still great to see Marvel Studios leaning into Kamala's fandom so much. This could make her perspective similar to how Spider-Man was introduced in Captain America: Civil War. But since Kamala isn't expected to be swept away on an Avengers mission right away, Ms. Marvel's episodic format should allow the series to really explore her love for the Avengers and other superheroes. Her fan fiction could play a big role in that and even allow Ms. Marvel to have some fun bringing to life the adventures Kamala imagines.
