10 Funniest Running Gags On Superstore, Ranked | ScreenRant

Working in retail has certainly become a rite of passage for millions of people as they enter the workforce. The universal experience of working in retail is part of what made Superstore so relatable to its viewers, and it's why so many people tuned in for six seasons to see what the Cloud 9 employees were up to that week.

In addition, to giving fans an epic will-they, won't-they relationship and tons of laughs, Superstore also dealt with real-life issues that weren't always fun to talk about. And yet, even in those episodes where deep issues were tackled, Superstore still managed to weave in laughter - often because of the many running gags the show had over the years.

10 "Shut Up, Sandra"

Like many modern sitcoms, Superstore had a character that all the other characters loved to hate for some crazy reason. In Superstore that character was Sandra. While Sandra ended up becoming a major player in the later seasons of Superstore, she started out as a running gag of sorts.

Every time Sandra tried to speak up at staff meetings or offer to help she was often shut down by someone, usually Dina, shouting "Shut up, Sandra." It might not be the nicest running gag, but it sure did make fans laugh the same way they laughed at Jerry on Parks and Rec and Toby on The Office.

9 Raccoons Invading Cloud 9

It's no secret that the Ozark Highlands Cloud 9 isn't the classiest place, so it's not all that surprising that raccoons regularly terrorize the store. Over the course of the six seasons, the raccoons make various appearances including eating all the food during an impromptu party Glenn had planned for the employees.

While fans have come to expect raccoons in every season, they might not know that the raccoons were inspired by the actual raccoons who were sometimes found on the sound stage Superstore used when filming.

8 Random Feet In The Store

In addition to random raccoons finding their way inside Cloud 9, the store also had a real "foot" problem. Starting during season three, employees or Cloud 9 shoppers found a severed foot in a random part of the store. Finding out who was leaving the feet quickly became a mystery for avid Superstore watchers.

Thankfully, they got some kind of closure in the finale episode. Not only did the finale involve finding an entire bag of severed feet in the middle of the store but it also finally showed viewers who had been hiding the feet: Cloud 9 employee Elias.

7 Amy's Name Tags

One of the most well-known running gags on Superstore is the fact that Amy rarely wears a name tag with her actual name on it. The gag was started in the pilot episode of the series and continued until the final episode of the show.

The reasoning behind this gag was that Amy never wanted customers to know her real name. In fact, she's only sported her actual name on a name tag three times, including the season one finale when she was acting as assistant manager of the store.

6 Dina Not Knowing Pop Culture

Dina is definitely one of the most intense characters on Superstore, which also makes her one of the most hilarious characters. Her constant need to be in control and professional on the job is the perfect backdrop for her humor.

In fact, Dina has a running gag of her own in that she's not very hip on what's cool, though she thinks she is. In season one, fans learn that she doesn't have a car radio and has no clue who Michael Jackson is. She also failed to recognize Howie Mandel and referred to Justin Bieber as "Justice Beaver."

5 Marcus Chanting

There's no doubt that Marcus was a comic relief character, so it works that he also came with his own running gag: his love of chanting. From season three on, Marcus can best be seen trying to get the rest of his co-workers to chant various things with him.

In fact, there is an entire episode that revolves around Marcus trying to get people to chant "fight" that ends up with him leading a "boner" chant. He later leads a positive chant when everyone begins chanting Sandra's name after she is fired for complaining about corporate on Twitter.

4 Impersonating Glenn

Glenn is a well-meaning manager, which makes it all the funnier when his employees make fun of him. And... it happens a lot. Part of what makes it so great is that Glenn rarely takes it as an insult.

One of the most common ways the employees made fun of Glenn was by impersonating him and his "muppet" voice. Garret, Dina, Jonah, and even Amy attempted their best Glenn impression over the seasons and every time it happened audiences laughed.

3 Everyone's Weird Halloween Costumes

Any great sitcom has at least one holiday-themed episode, and luckily for Superstore they've had several. However, unlike many sitcoms Superstores' best holiday episodes tended to be their Halloween ones which had a running gag of their own.

Cloud 9 regularly put on a costume contest and the employees were always eager to win. And while Dina chose to come as a sexy cop every year, Jonah found ways to make his costumes political coming as gerrymandering, Brexit, and the disappearing bee crisis.

2 Glenn's Car Constantly Getting Destroyed

Sometimes the best part of a running gag is that one never knows when it will resurface. That's part of what made the running gag of Glenn's car being destroyed so great.

In the first season, Glenn's car is stolen. Glenn's car windows are most often the ones harmed, having been shattered by billboards, ladders, and power washers. It's also been hit by Myrtle and driven through Cloud 9.

1 Cloud 9 Customers

Not every running gag starts at the beginning of a show, but the running gag of cutting to random customers has always been a staple of Superstore episodes. With over six seasons' worth of episodes, there have been some great customer cuts over the years.

From little kids using toilets in the middle of the store, men using deodorant and then putting it back on the shelves, and even a woman touching every single shopping cart after they've been sanitized, the Cloud 9 customers are truly their own kind of hilarious.
