Potential spoilers for Shadowman #5 ahead!
There is an epic team up on the horizon in the Valiant Universe, thanks to the Deadside War unfolding in the pages of Shadowman. The book, which concluded its initial story arc with issue four, will go on a short hiatus until January 2022 and will return with a new storyline that will see Valiant’s supernatural heroes, including not only Shadowman but Punk Mambo, unite against the horrific Deadside.
Shadowman was one of Valiant’s first characters, first appearing in his civilian guise of Jack Boniface in X-O Manowar #4 before going on to become Shadowman soon after. The character has starred in multiple books and has been adapted to other media as well, most notably a video game from the late 1990s. When Valiant returned to the comics scene in 2012, Shadowman was again one of their initial offerings; a new Shadowman title, written by Cullen Bunn with art by Jon-Davis Hunt recently premiered and has redefined not only the character and his place in the Valiant universe but the entire Valiant Universe as well. The most recent issue revealed that the Deadside, originally thought to be simply another dimension, is actually a horrifying and extremely powerful god—something straight out of the nightmares of H.P. Lovecraft.
Speaking with Comic Book Resources, Cullen Bunn explained that the Deadside is trying to invade our reality, and if it is able to do so, will spell certain doom for the Valiant Universe. Bunn explains that Shadowman knows he is up against the biggest threat of his life and will need help. Bunn cryptically hinted that both Punk Mambo and Master Darque will play roles in this story but did not elaborate any further.
Punk Mambo and Master Darque’s inclusion makes sense, as both are tied to Shadowman and the concept of the Lao. Mambo is something of an anti-hero but will do the right thing when her back is up against the wall; Shadowman can probably count on her to help. Master Darque, on the other hand, is one of Shadowman’s greatest villains (Darque killed Shadowman in a previous incarnation of Valiant) and will most likely want the powers of the Deadside to himself. Could Master Darque switch sides, and come to Shadowman’s aid? Or will he help the Deadside in destroying all life on Earth? Finally, could other Valiant heroes, such as Ninjak or X-O Manowar, come to Shadowman’s defense as well?
Shadowman is one of the core characters of the Valiant universe, and next year he will be at the center of an epic team-up, thanks to the Deadside War.
