The Hills: Rachel Bilson Was Offered New Beginnings Role Before Mischa

Turns out The Hills: New Beginnings offered a spot to Rachel Bilson before Mischa Barton took on the role. The two were co-stars on the hit teen drama, The O.C., which ran from 2003-2007. The show followed the lives of four teenagers living in Orange County, although (spoiler alert) Mischa's character, Marissa Cooper, didn't make it to the final season. From near-death experiences in Tijuana to having the most popular artists of the 2000s perform in their town, it makes sense why The Hills would want the girls from The O.C. on their show. Especially when you remember that The Hills was a spinoff of the "real-life" O.C., MTV's Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County.

Rachel has recently started a podcast with fellow O.C. co-star, Melinda Clarke, who portrayed Julie Cooper on the show. Welcome to the OC, Bitches! has Rachel and Melinda going over episodes of the show each week while also giving a behind-the-scenes look at what it's like to be on a hit TV series. The podcast has featured guests like everyone's favorite TV parents, Peter Gallagher and Kelly Rowan, and the man who coined the podcast's title, Chris Carmack. Other stars like Mischa, Ben McKenzie and Adam Brody haven't made an appearance, although Rachel has said she would like for Mischa to come on.

In an August 3 episode of Welcome to the OC, Bitches! with guest Danny Pellegrino, Rachel revealed that she was actually offered a role on The Hills: New Beginnings before Mischa, but passed on the offer. "I was actually asked to be on The Hills... That I graciously passed," Rachel said. "And then, who they wound up casting, was Mischa," she continued. Rachel also mentioned that although she's met Lauren Conrad before, she's not close with any of The Hills Cast. Mischa ended up joining the first season cast, but she didn't return for a second season.

On the podcast, Danny also spoke about how he liked that Mischa's storyline on the first season touched on her time being in the spotlight at a young age. "Did she say she was bullied and mistreated and all of that or was it a better more positive experience?" Rachel asked. This comes after claims that Mischa was mistreated on the set of The O.C., although Danny said Mischa never specifically talked about The O.C. while on The Hills, just that time in her life. On a June 1 episode of the podcast, which featured a clip from the upcoming August 3 episode, Rachel and Melinda responded to the claims that Mischa was bullied on set. While Melinda said she could only speak for herself, she sympathized with the fact that Mischa was so young (she was only 16 during the first season) and under so much pressure. Rachel said that she would like to talk to her and find out what her experience was on the show since they saw things from different perspectives.

While it would have been interesting to see Rachel, or even both Rachel and Mischa, on The Hills: New Beginnings, it doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon. Hopefully, Mischa will be open to sitting down with Rachel and Melinda and explaining her perspective of what went down on The O.C. set. Being famous at such a young age can't be easy, and it would be great to hear Mischa's side of things.
