Warning: contains spoilers for I Am Batman #0!
As seen in DC Comics’ recent Future State timeline, the new Batman, Tim "Jace" Fox, is a vigilante that does things his way, and now it’s been confirmed that unlike Bruce Wayne’s version of The Caped Crusader, Jace’s Batman wants to start a revolution, not just fight crime. And while Jace has yet to formally don the cape and cowl in his newly launched series, his journey in getting there is already well underway.
Brought to readers’ attention in John Ridley and Travel Foreman's I Am Batman #0, this issue opens up during a time long before Jace even has an inkling of becoming the next Batman of Gotham City. Trying to atone for his sin of committing a hit and run that he has yet to be held accountable for, Jace is training his body and mind to their limits to become something more than he’s ever been before.
Talking to his trainers as he takes a breather, Jace tells them that he wants to repay the life debt he owes to them in a way that begins to line up with the values his eventual Future State take on The Dark Knight is driven by. Thinking that he wants to become a “revolutionary” and a “symbol of resistance,” two ideas that he’s told are “people” and “things” respectively, Jace is also reminded that he needs to find out not what he’s fighting “against”, but what he’s fighting “for.”

And while these are already interesting takes on familiar ideas that Bruce Wayne’s Batman embraces, it’s not until it’s suggested to Jace that he should continue his training under the hero known as Katana that his unique vision for Batman begins to take shape. Saying, “I don’t know. Katana fights some pretty bad people, but…I want to fight a system,” Jace lets readers in on what his version of Batman will come to fight for: a revolution.
Standing for more than simply making Gotham City a better place to live, Jace’s reasoning for becoming Batman is much different from Bruce’s, despite their similar tactics and choice in bat-themed spandex. Well-known for his unwavering obsession with fighting the criminal element regardless of the cost, Bruce’s goals are more Gotham-oriented in a traditional sense; meaning his mission more so focuses on making sure the people of his city never face the tragedy that led to Batman's origin in the first place. Conversely, Jace’s goals are more about him wanting to uproot the systematic issues he sees keeping Gothamites down by dealing with crime inherent to that specific part of Gotham’s corruptive nature; a powerful and unique parallel to Bruce’s sole drive to quash the city’s super villainous threats to make life a little better for the everyday person walking the streets of Gotham.
Wanting a revolution more than a straight-up war on crime, Jace Fox is slowly moving towards solidifying his unique vision as the eventual protector of Gotham City, only driven by an idea that’s slightly different — yet equally as important — as Bruce Wayne’s. He might not be Batman just yet, but Jace is already putting in the work where it counts.
