Soulcalibur 6 Brings Back Hwang As Final Season 2 DLC Fighter

The final DLC fighter of Soulcalibur VI's second season pass is a blast from the past: Hwang (originally known as Hwang Seong-gyeong) is the franchise's original swordfighter, having appeared in Soul Blade, Soul Edge, and Soulcalibur I and III. His role would be filled by Yun-seong in the preceding three games and PSP spinoff Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny. The series has gone without this particular style of fighter since then, so his return should be great news to longtime fans looking for a reason to check in again. Hwang joins Setsuka, Hilde, and Haohmaru from SNK's Samurai Showdown in the currently available DLC bundle.

Hwang's disappearance from the series is an arbitrary condition of the game's story, one that is mostly rebooted in Soulcalibur VI. The tale of souls and swords eternally retold eventually led to the poorly received Soulcalibur V, with characters that were either cloned from old favorites or veterans who utilized completely different fighting styles. Learning the lesson that many other fighting game franchises have learned over the years, Soulcalibur VI presents only a handful of newcomers alongside a recognizable cast that players can latch onto in a story rebooted to make it all make sense. The addition of Hwang adds something that was missing from an already huge roster.

Hwang's reveal for Soulcalibur VI came in the form of a new Bandai Namco launch trailer, revealed during the SoulCalibur Online Challenge EU West finals. The video showcases the returning character's well-known fighting style and his new finishing maneuvers. The character is nicknamed the "Secret Royal Blademaster," a reference to his initial reveal in the trailer being hidden behind black armor that hid his face. His distinctive animations and move set mean that this isn't the same case as Soulcalibur III, where the character appeared as a skin for a create-a-fighter move set and lacked many of the special features that would have made him a unique combatant.

Alongside the update that adds Hwang to the game, Soulcalibur VI will also bring free updates to everyone and a new customization pack for players who want to make more of their own creations. On the free side, there's the Motien Pass-Ruins stage, which looks to be a giant stone triangle atop a mountain range with lightning going off in the background. Players can also grab classic costume parts for Seong Mi-na and two story chapters for Mitsurugi and Nightmare free of charge. For a little coin, players can also get Character Creation Set F, which brings in more options from sister-series Tekken. There are also a few more revealing outfits for the ladies, because none of these packs would be complete without them.

While Soulcalibur VI's addition of long-abandoned character Hwang adds another argument as to why it's the best entry in the series since at least the GameCube days, that doesn't much matter if the franchise continues to spark interest only in the hardest of the hardcore fans. The game has never reached the heights of the Dreamcast days with its numerous sequels, not even with the back to basics formula that worked so well for Street Fighter. It will be interesting to see if Bandai Namco continues on with the franchise for another chapter or tries something else as the companion to the next Tekken.
