Diane Keaton Admits She Didn’t Originally Like Godfather 3

Celebrated actress Diane Keaton revealed that she didn’t like The Godfather Part III upon its initial 1990 release. The third entry in the award-winning and highly acclaimed Godfather series didn’t fare and its two predecessors and has long been considered the weak link in the crime family saga. The original Godfather was only the second film that Keaton had ever starred in when she took on Michael Corleone’s (Al Pacino) girlfriend/wife, Kay. It came a mere six years before she would be honored with the best actress Oscar for her performance as the eponymous Annie Hall in Woody Allen’s 1977 smash comedy hit.

Kay is a character who will forever prominently feature in cinematic history. Her story forms a subtle arc throughout the series, ultimately showcasing the character’s complete transformation in Part III. Despite the loose ends that The Godfather Part III ties up in terms of its characters, the film’s popularity (or, as some would argue, its quality) can’t match what the two previous films in the series offered. Even Keaton could have once been counted as one of the film’s detractors. But with the upcoming release of the director’s cut, the newly re-titled The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone has changed the star’s mind.

In an interview with Variety, Keaton has praised the new cut – as well as admitting that she never really cared for the film the first time around:

“It was one of the best moments of my life to watch it. To me it was a dream come true. I saw the movie in a completely different light. When I saw it way back, it was like ‘Oh, I don’t know.’ It didn’t seem to do that well and the reviews weren’t great. But Francis restructured the beginning and the end and man, I’m telling you it worked. “I don’t know why people didn’t appreciate it, but I was one of them. What was wrong with me? Why didn’t I like this before? But I didn’t. I kind of just dismissed it and thought, ‘oh well.'”

Coppola’s director’s cut has been making news for some time now. With its release dates fast approaching (December 4 limited theatrical engagement, December 8 on digital and Blu-Ray), fans are likely to be very eager to see just how different the film is. What is known about this new cut is that it contains a different beginning and end, two major components to any movie. In particular, the ending has been criticized by fans over the years. However, The Godfather Part III has numerous qualities that may have held it back compared to its earlier counterparts.

The important thing to remember with this director’s cut is that only so much can improve a film made thirty years ago. Coppola is a master filmmaker – there’s no question about that. Still, after the phenomenal success of the first two Godfather films, it’s fair to say that whatever happened in it, The Godfather Part III was always going to have its work cut out for itself. Whether or not The Godfather Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone can solve the original cuts’ problems is hard to know, but whatever’s been done, it’s fair to say that Coppola did what he thought best for his film.
