Star Wars: Every New Planet In The Sequels Explained

The Star Wars sequels not only introduced new heroes and villains, but also new planets of which some played a key role in each movie’s story – and here’s every new planet in the sequels. Back in 1977, George Lucas introduced the audience to a galaxy far, far away and the characters that would lead a big part of this universe in the movie now known as Star Wars: A New Hope, which along with Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, forms what’s known as the “original trilogy”.

The Star Wars universe continued expanding between 1999 and 2005 with the prequel trilogy, which focused on the backstory of Anakin Skywalker, from his days as a young slave in Tatooine to his rise as Sith lord Darth Vader. After that, this universe kept expanding in other media, most notably the TV series The Clone Wars, and following the acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, the studio began working on a new trilogy with the purpose of closing the Skywalker saga and introducing new characters. The sequel trilogy was released between 2015 and 2019, and while the first movie, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was well-received, the following movies were met with a lot of criticism and backlash, further dividing the Star Wars fandom.

The sequel trilogy failed to tell a cohesive story, and in its attempts to keep connections with the original trilogy and its characters, it ended up hurting its new characters, particularly Rey (Daisy Ridley), who turned out to be Sheev Palpatine’s granddaughter. However, among the good things that can be pointed out from the sequels is that they introduced new planets, with their own species, environments, and some of them with an important role in the story, so much that they will most likely appear or at least be mentioned in other Star Wars media. Here’s every new planet in the Star Wars sequels explained:

Jakku is a desert planet that made its first appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It’s a remote and lawless place, considered by many to be distant and somewhat worthless, but it saw some big events. Prior to the events of The Force Awakens, Jakku was the site of the Battle of Jakku, which took place a year and four days after the Battle of Endor and ended the Galactic Civil War in favor of the New Republic. Jakku’s first appearance in the Star Wars saga happened right at the beginning of The Force Awakens when Lor San Tekka (Max von Sydow) gave a fragment of the map that led to Luke Skywalker to Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) before his village was attacked by the First Order. Jakku was also home to Rey and was the place where she, BB8, and Finn (John Boyega) met, and where the Millennium Falcon had been hiding in plain sight as it was believed to be nothing more than junk. Jakku has also appeared in novels and video games, such as Star Wars Battlefront and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

The First Order’s military base and superweapon Starkiller Base was located on the ice planet Ilum, a snow-covered planet with a kyber crystalline core that had been used by the Jedi Order for the rite of passage known as the “Gathering”, where Jedi younglings had to find and harvest kyber crystals for their lightsabers. Once the Jedi Order was destroyed, the Galactic Empire took over Ilum and began excavating it for its vast supply of kyber crystals, which caused a massive trench to open up along its equator, and after the fall of the Empire, the First Order converted it into the Starkiller Base. The base was armed with a superweapon which drew its ray firepower directly from a star, which made it deadlier than the Death Star. The Starkiller Base was destroyed by Poe Dameron in Star Wars: The Force Awakens before the First Order could attack the planet D’Qar, the site of the Resistance’s headquarters.

D’Qar was a verdant planet that after the formation of the New Republic served as the location of the headquarters of the Resistance, now led by Leia Organa. D’Qar made its debut in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which saw the Resistance evacuating the base as it became the First Order’s target. It appeared again in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, after which the Resistance had to change the location of its headquarters.

Another planet first seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Takodana was a planet covered in forests and small lakes, and due to its location, it was a popular departure point as it offered easy access to trade routes that connected the Inner and Outer Rim. Takodana was home to Maz Kanata’s castle (or Takodana Castle), where Rey was drawn to Luke Skywalker’s lightsaber, which Kanata had kept for years.

Hosnian Prime debuted in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and was the planet the Galactic Senate used as the capital of the New Republic. Hosnian Prime was a cosmopolitan ecumenopolis located along the Corellian Trade Spine. Prior to serving as the New Republic’s capital, the surgeon consul of Hosnian Prime, Plas Lelkot, hid refugees in his own chateau, which along with his support for the Rebel Alliance, made the Galactic Empire imprison him at Ashmead’s Lock prison in Kashyyyk. Many years later, the First Order saw the Republic as an illegitimate government incapable of maintaining order, and so attacked it with the Starkiller Base’s superweapon, destroying the planet.

Ahch-To made its first appearance at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but viewers got to see a lot more of it in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Ahch-To is mostly covered in water and has numerous rocky islands with green trees. It was the birthplace of the Jedi Order and was where the ancient Jedi texts were kept. Following the murder of his Jedi students by his nephew and apprentice Ben Solo (Adam Driver), who turned to the dark side and became Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker went into exile seeking the first Jedi Temple, and thus ended up in Ahch-To. Rey traveled there accompanied by R2-D2 and Chewbacca to convince Luke to return, but he refused, though he ended up agreeing to train her. It was on this planet where Luke was visited by the Force ghost of Yoda, who burned the tree that kept the Jedi texts. Luke later projected himself through the Force to fight Kylo Ren in Crait while his body was in Ahch-To, with the Jedi master passing away after the battle. In Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Rey traveled to Ahch-To out of fear of falling to the dark side, and she was visited by Luke’s Force ghost, who lifted his old X-Wing out of the water so she could travel to Exegol. Ahch-To is home to the Lanais, an avian sentient species who took on the role of Caretakers, the thala-sirens (large marine mammals that produced green milk), and the Porgs.

Cantonica debuted in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and is a desert planet, home to the casino city Canto Bight, where wealthy tourists and gamblers can be found. Canto Bight was also a destination for war profiteers who sold weapons to the First Order and the Resistance. Finn and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran) traveled there to recruit the Master Codebreaker so they could disable the First Order’s hyperspace tracker.

Also introduced in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Crait is a small, salty mineral planet known for being covered with a layer of white salt over its red soil and for hosting a Rebel Alliance outpost. Years later, it became a haven for the Resistance, and the site of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order, including the fight between Kylo Ren and Luke Skywalker, who was projecting himself from Ahch-To. Crait was inhabited by the Vulptices, fox-like creatures with white, crystalline fur.

Another desert planet, Pasaana debuted in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Its main economic activity is dust farming, and it's known for the Festival of the Ancestors, an event held every 42 years. Under the surface of Pasaana are various caves connecting to freshwater aquifers, though also a number of predators live there, such as the vexis, a huge serpent. Following the reveal of the Emperor’s return, Rey, Finn, Poe Dameron, Chewbacca, C-3PO, and BB8 traveled to Pasaana, where they came across Lando Calrissian and also found the remains of Ochi of Bestoon, including his dagger, which had the Sith inscriptions needed to locate the Emperor’s wayfinder. Pasaana is also home to the Aki-Aki, a sentient species.

Kijimi was a cold, mountainous planet that first appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Kijimi had no central government, which made it easy for the First Order to take over, imposing martial law, patrolling the city, and searching for children to kidnap and turn into stormtroopers. Kijimi was the home of Zorii Bliss, leader of the smuggling gang “Spice Runners of Kijimi” and Babu Frik, an Anzellan droidsmith who helped Rey and company retrieve information from C-3PO’s memory banks. Kijimi was destroyed by the Sith Eternal, but Zorii Bliss and Babu Frik managed to escape.

Kef Bir appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker and is one of Endor’s moons, known as the Ocean Moon of Endor as it is covered by oceans and grassland islands. The wreckage of the Death Star II fell into this planet, which is why Rey and company ended up there, as the inscriptions on Ochi’s blade led them there to retrieve the Emperor’s wayfinder.

Exegol is a dark, desert planet where Darth Sidious and the Sith Eternal hid for years and was also the birthplace of Supreme Leader Snoke, who was created by Sidious. The dry conditions of the planet, along with the rubbing of dust particles in its atmosphere, created static discharges that appeared as lightning strikes from the planet's surface, giving it a macabre look. Exegol also housed the Final Order, a massive fleet of warships created by Sidious and the Sith Eternal in order to establish a new Empire. However, the Resistance arrived with a bigger fleet, thus defeating the Sith Eternal and later killing Darth Sidious for good. Exegol appeared in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Ajan Kloss debuted in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and is a jungle moon orbiting the gas giant Ajara. Ajan Kloss served as a training ground for Luke and Leia, and years later hosted the Resistance during the war against the First Order. The Resistance forces scrambled when Ajan Kloss’ location was uncovered but returned once the Sith Eternal were defeated.
