DWTS: Why Derek Hough May Replace Judge Len Goodman Permanently

There is talk that Derek Hough from Dancing With The Stars will replace Len Goodman permanently. Now that DWTS season 29 has come to an end, and former Bachelorette Kaitlyn Bristowe and her pro partner Artem Chigvintsev have gotten the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy, fans are looking forward to another season. They are also wondering which new additions will be seen again in the future.

Longtime viewers of Dancing With the Stars may have been excited when the 29th season was announced, but they were left shocked (and somewhat disappointed) by some of the changes to the latest season. While it was no surprise that the show did not have a live audience each week, it was a complete shock when the news broke of a change in host. The original host of the show, Tom Bergeron, and his co-host Erin Andrews were replaced by new host Tyra Banks. The changes did not stop there. Head judge Len Goodman could not be a part of the season due to the fact that he could not travel to the United States from London. This was because of travel restrictions brought on by the pandemic. Len was temporarily replaced on the judging panel by former pro dancer, Derek Hough.

Now that DWTS season 29 has wrapped up, will these new changes to the show be brought back for future seasons? It has been speculated that the show may benefit from keeping dancer turned judge Derek Hough as a returning judge. According to Heavy, once travel restrictions are lifted, enabling Len Goodman to travel back for the show, "he may not be welcomed back." Derek Hough did such a good job judging this past season that it may be in the show's best interest to keep him in place of Len. Derek was liked by his fellow judges and also by contestants, pro dancers, and crew members. It was stated that he brought a "fresh energy" to the DWTS ballroom.

Originally, the show had planned for Derek to be a temporary fill-in judge due to Len's inability to travel. Now, concerns are rising about Len's return to the show. Many are worried that it may not be safe for Len's health as he is 76 years old. Although Len is seen as a "legend" on the show, in light of the fact that he is the head judge, times are changing. Len's fellow judge Carrie Ann Inaba has pushed for Derek's stay on the judging panel. She has even shared that the season's success is, in part, thanks to Derek's spot on the judging panel.

It's hard to say how long it will take before it's safe for Dancing With The Stars head judge Len Goodman to return to the show. Even if the decision to keep Derek Hough as a judge is made, that does not necessarily mean he will replace Len. There have been four judges on the show before. Derek's sister Julianne Hough was the fourth judge on the panel from seasons 19-24. It seems as though Derek may be following in his sister's Dancing with the Stars footsteps.
