Saved By The Bell Stars Respond To Fans Shipping Mac & Daisy

Saved by the Bell reboot stars have responded to fans shipping Mac and Daisy on the show. Developed by Tracy Wigfield, Saved by the Bell is a TV sitcom that premiered on Peacock on November 25, 2020. The show serves as a revival of Sam Bobrick's TV series of the same name that aired on NBC from 1989 to 1993. The reboot focuses on a new batch of students at Bayside High, along with several returning characters from the original series. In the show, Mark-Paul Gosselaar's Zack Morris, who is now the Governor of California, faces backlash over his mandate to close several underfunded schools in the state. To salvage his reputation, Zack transfers students from the closed schools to the high-performing schools, including Bayside High. But as the new students transfer to Bayside, they experience a hard dose of culture shock.

The lead characters in the Saved by the Bell reboot are portrayed by Haskiri Velazquez and Mitchell Hoog. While Velazquez essays the role of Daisy Jiménez, an intelligent and inspiring sophomore who transfers to Bayside, Hoog stars as Mac Morris, the charming, privileged son of Governor Zack Morris and Kelly Kapowski (Tiffani Thiessen). Daisy and Mac shared a rather complex equation on the show. The two hail from drastically different social and financial backgrounds, which causes some logical friction between them. But as the story progresses, the two become close friends. Daisy convinces Mac that he can be self-fulfilled just by being nice, whereas Mac makes Daisy realize that she possesses the ability to achieve anything she works hard for. While Mac and Daisy grow quite close towards the end of the season, the show does not reveal if the two harbor romantic feelings for one another.

Recently, during an interview with ComicBook, Hoog and Velazquez addressed Daisy and Mac's relationship on Saved By The Bell. The actors affirmed that they were surprised to know that fans were shipping the main characters together. They also revealed their dreams for a potential season 2, including their hopes for their characters' romantic interests. As per Velazquez, she thinks season 2 will be too soon for a Mac/Daisy relationship to happen. Velazquez doesn't want a major love interest for Daisy in season 2, rather she wants her character to focus more on her ambitions and on making Bayside a more inclusive place. Velazquez said:

"Maybe if there's a season two, like the last episode to lead people on a cliffhanger for wanting more. We can't give it to them so quick. Yeah. We've got to tease them a little bit."

"I think I want Daisy to maybe have... I don't know if I want her to have a love interest, but I think it'll be cool for her to maybe have a little crush or something. But I think that I'm still in love with the fact that she's so focused on herself and her future that I think I want to see more of that. I want to see where Daisy can take her future and how she can keep inspiring the Bayside kids and how she's able to switch the school around. So I definitely want to dive in a little more to that for sure."

Hoog, too, doesn't expect Mac to fall for Daisy any time soon. He says that in season 1, Mac was able to forge a warm bond with his father, and in season 2 he hopes to explore that relationship further. Hoog believes that Mac is mostly a loner, but it will still be interesting if he gets a genuine love interest in season 2. Initially, Hoog wasn't aware that fans wanted Mac and Daisy to be together. But then, much to his amazement, he came across fans' video collages on Instagram shipping Mac and Daisy together. When asked if he had any ideas for his character in season 2, Hoog said:

"I don't think so. I gained this relationship and it kind of ended on a sweet note for me. The fact that that, kind of the reassurance of love from my dad. And I think that a relationship can always go further. I mean, maybe it would be nice to find a love interest. I don't know. Mac's a lonely guy."

"It was funny... I was scrolling through [Instagam] and somebody sent me, I think it may have been Belmont, or somebody, they sent me this collage of videos. And it was somebody trying to get Daisy and Mac to date in season two. And I was like, 'Is this a thing right now? What's going on?'"

As indicated by Peacock's recent viewership figures, the Saved by the Bell reboot was the most-watched original show on the streaming service in 2020. Given the numbers, therefore, it is not far-fetched to think Peacock could commission the show for a second season soon.  During season 1, Saved by the Bell demonstrated the proper execution of a series revival. It refrained from overt fan service, like forcing popular characters into relationships, and allowed for its characters to grow naturally. Saved by the Bell also catered to Daisy and Mac in a way that was insightful and independent. Surely, it will be nice to see the two characters date sometime in the future. But, at least for season 2, it will be better if the show focuses on the characters' individual paths and fleshes out the more obscure aspects of their personalities.
