Mads Mikkelsen teases how Hannibal season 4 could integrate plot lines from Silence of the Lambs. A fourth season of the show has long been discussed since the conclusion of Hannibal season 3 in 2015. The recent addition of the show's three seasons to Netflix's library has only increased interest in a new season of the show, and questions about a continuation pop up in nearly every interview of those once involved with the series. Despite being a critical success, the show never took off ratings-wise. However, it has amassed a large and passionate cult following since.
Silence of the Lambs starred Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster as Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling, respectively. Until Hannibal came along, it was the most revered of the onscreen depictions of Hannibal Lecter. Excitement for Hannibal season 4 has been largely fueled by the fact that creator Bryan Fuller planned to integrate elements of the iconic film into the show. Despite some copyright issues, Fuller has made it clear that he wants to bring in characters like the serial killer Buffalo Bill.
Speaking to Indiewire, Mikkelsen spoke about a potential Hannibal season 4, joking that the show is brought up in every interview he does, evidence of his truly convincing work as the cannibalistic serial killer. Mikkelsen talked about how they would have to move some things around in terms of the plot because they still don't technically have the rights to characters from Silence of the Lambs. However, that did not stop Mikkelsen from fantasizing about who would be cast as Buffalo Bill, with the actor offering up his own casting suggestion. Check out his full thoughts below:
I don’t think it’s a secret that if it does happen, we would love to go into ‘Silence of the Lambs. That’s always been an issue because they didn’t have the rights for that book. But that’s obviously the most famous part and we’d love to go in there. We’d obviously switch it around a little and do all kinds of crazy stuff with it. That story is so interesting and the characters in it are as interesting. We’d switch around the genders and maybe even put two characters into one. We would love to find someone to play Buffalo Bill. That’s going to be tough. We found a Hannibal, so it’s possible.
We already used Michael Pitt for Mason and that was fantastic. If he wasn’t playing Mason I’d love to see him as Buffalo Bill.
One of the reasons that the desire for a fourth season is so strong is the potential for Buffalo Bill and Clarice Starling to make an appearance. Silence of the Lambs is a modern horror classic and one of the better onscreen adaptations of the Hannibal Lecter character. Seeing that brought into the twisted world of Fuller's show would make for an exciting season. Despite the fact that Fuller doesn't have the rights to the story or the character, the creator says he has plans to integrate elements of the story in the show in unique ways, an exciting prospect for fans of the show who already loved the ways in which Fuller warped the various characters to his vision.
Mikkelsen's take on the character of Hannibal is one of the reasons why fans love the show so much. Seeing him go up against a foe like Buffalo Bill is an enticing enough idea to give the season the green-light. With all the hype around the show's addition to Netflix, calls for a fourth season have only grown in recent months. Massive buzz surrounding the show and the introduction of an iconic and well-known storyline gives a potential Hannibal season 4 the opportunity to be more popular than ever.
