GTA Online Expansion Teased In New Cryptic Video | Screen Rant

Rockstar has revealed a mysterious new expansion for Grand Theft Auto Online in a brief, cryptic video on Twitter. The online game has been going strong ever since the release of its parent, Grand Theft Auto V, in 2013. There have been content droughts here and there, but overall Rockstar has made an online experience that a lot of people enjoy. More content is still coming; just last week, Rockstar challenged players to steal $100 billion dollars in the game's heist missions.

It's good to see Rockstar standing by the online game. It has an unfortunate history of neglecting not only GTA Online, but Red Dead Online as well. The latter, an online companion to the landmark title Red Dead Redemption 2, recently saw its content drought resolved by the release of the major Naturalist expansion, which brought in new animals to hunt, new NPCs to get missions and gear from, and a new role for players to train in. Grand Theft Auto Online hasn't been quite that lucky, unfortunately. It benefitted from a pretty major Halloween expansion earlier this year, but before that it didn't have much; Rockstar even forgot the game's 7th anniversary.

Players might have more content to look forward to soon, though. Rockstar released a brief, cryptic video on Twitter earlier today, titled the "El Rubio Dossier." The "Dossier" is a ten second clip which puts together a montage of apparent surveillance footage. Locations such as a massive sprawling manor house, a beach, and some farmland appear in the clip. The teaser also identifies a deceased John Doe, whose last known location is the Los Santos International Airport and whose known affiliations include the titular El Rubio. This hint seems to suggest that El Rubio is a faction, possibly a drug cartel. No information has been given about the release date of what is, presumably, the game's newest expansion, but the GTA Online logo was briefly flashed in the video to give people an idea of what to expect.

Mystery is always a great way to get video game fans interested. Activision proved that in a big way when it was first marketing Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. The company put together a mysterious ARG, sending fans slide projectors and giving them a trail of cryptic bread crumbs and hints to solve in order to learn the identity of the franchise's newest title. This strange challenge entertained and excited a lot of players, and fit very well into the sinister Cold War theme of the new FPS.

If Rockstar's cryptic new marketing campaign is anything like Activision's, then GTA Online fans are in for quite a ride. But even if it isn't, this mysterious video indicates that new content is definitely on the way, and that's good news in and of itself. Hopefully this new El Rubio content won't be too long coming, and GTA Online players will have some exciting new crime sprees to embark on soon.
