Marvel Villains Love The Simpsons as Much as Everyone Else

Warning: Spoilers for Savage Avengers #14

Pop culture worlds collide in the latest chapter of Marvel’s Savage Avengers. The series is full of surprises, and consistently delivers on the fun and adventure it promised when it launched last year. Written by Gerry Duggan and illustrated by Patch Zircher, Savage Avengers #14 is no exception and is full of little treasures.

The book wastes no time getting started. After seeing a man vaporized in Bruges, Belgium the story cuts to half-way across the world to Greenwich Village, NYC, the current location of The Bar With No Name. For the unaware, The Bar With No Name has a long history in the Marvel Comics Universe dating back to 1986 when it was first introduced by writer Mark Gruenwald in Captain America #319. It’s a secret hangout for current and former costumed supervillains to drink, commiserate, and share stories.

It’s a quiet night out for the bar’s supervillain patrons, but alas, as is often the case with the would-be secret drinking establishment, the peace doesn’t last long. Busting through the door, in walk Conan of Cimmeria and Magik, looking for Cain Marko, aka The Juggernaut. As far as crimefighters go, these are two of the least likely heroes to take it easy on the bad guys, so it’s a good thing no one’s looking for a fight. Like any self-respecting secret establishment, especially one catering to costumed criminals, The Bar With No Name has a password, and Magik wants to know what it is. Turns out the password is a reference from The Simpsons: “Here’s to alcohol: the cause of and solution to, all life’s problems.”

The quote comes from an episode titled “Homer vs. The Eighteenth Amendment” (Season 8, Episode 18), which first aired in 1997. In the episode, Homer Simpson becomes the mysterious “Beer Baron” of Springfield when he starts distilling his own liquor to fight against the town’s newly-implemented prohibition. It’s possibly one of the top most quoted Simpsons phrases, and considering the context of The Bar With No Name - an illegal and underground speakeasy - it’s a perfect fit for a password.

It’s a brief moment in an otherwise epic issue that includes The Black Knight taking on the KKK, an Asgardian red dragon, and Juggernaut dropping from the sky, so it’s easy to miss. But this small detail hints at a much larger reality: supervillains watch The Simpsons. In the world of the comics, someone would’ve had to think of that password and pass it along to those in the know. Everybody that night, including Juggernaut, would’ve used the phrase to get in. It’s almost heartwarming to think of career criminals sharing in an inside joke from a beloved cartoon.
