Animal Crossing Players' The Ring Cosplay Is Simple But Creepy

The customization options in Animal Crossing: New Horizons truly know no bounds, as one player has recreated a scene from The Ring on their island that is both adorable and just a little bit creepy. Animal Crossing: New Horizons recently celebrated its one-year anniversary, but passing this milestone has not slowed down the game’s popularity. Even as Nintendo’s wholesome life simulation game takes another spin around the sun, players simply cannot get enough of Tom Nook and the gentle escape that comes with island living.

While a lot of Animal Crossing: New Horizons' success can be equated to the timing of its release, there is no denying the universal appeal that the game possesses. With no enemies to fend off save for a few pesky tarantulas, ACNH offers players a tranquil way to relax at the end of a busy day. But mellow vibes aside, it also allows players the chance to show off their own creativity and vision. The endless supply of crafting and customization options within Animal Crossing: New Horizons means that endless homages to television, game, and cinema have been popping up all over the internet.

And now, yet another big screen hit has made its way to the docile shores of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. This time, it's 2002’s supernatural horror, The Ring. Or, more specifically, the haunting scene where Samara Morgan climbs out of the well on the television screen. This cosplay, shared by reddit user Sylver_Acnh and entitled “The Glitch,” is a simple but effective one. With moody rain backlighting the scene of a well and Sylver_Achn’s avatar, it is easy to forget that this is a family friendly game. The image immediately evokes all of the fear felt when first witnessing the spirit of Samara all those years ago. Thankfully, though, on this occasion, the figure in the well does not proceed to walk up and out of the screen, but rather stays put.

While this is a haunting example of just how versatile Animal Crossing: New Horizons can be, there are also a myriad of other, more lighthearted, island dedications out there. This has included everything from a player recreating an iconic scene from Disney’s Mulan to an island modeled entirely (and impressively) around an IKEA store, of all things.

As new updates continue to come for Animal Crossing: New Horizons, so will new items. This will create an even greater window of opportunity for players to show off their individual tastes and styles. Perhaps, one day, someone will manage to create an even more eerie homage to The Ring. Just as long as the avatars stay firmly on their islands and do not make their way into the real world, everything will be alright.
