Hulu's hit series The Handmaid's Tale, adapted from Margaret Atwood's book of the same name, is a speculative dystopian fiction story about the radically conservative and oppressive government that overtakes the United States and enslaves its former citizens, including June Osborne.
The show seemingly tries to ground itself in reality in some ways, but can push the boundaries of believability in many others. However, which plot twists in the series were actually so over the top that it was difficult for fans and viewers to believe it was even real?
10 Commander Lawrence Risking It All To Save Emily
Commander Lawrence justifies his assistance with Emily's escape by explaining to June that she was an extraordinarily smart person and of great value to humanity. However, as his character has evolved, what he did for Emily seems to be very out of character for him.
He is the ultimate pragmatist and seems to look at everything from a purely logical and statistical standpoint, so risking it all on the fly to save one person doesn't really fit with his MO.
9 The Swiss Rejecting Nick
At a certain point in season 3, June tries to facilitate a relationship between Nick and the Swiss government in the hopes that it will help Nichole stay in Canada. The Swiss agree to meet with him, but then reject any deal with him because of the things that he did during the rise of Gilead.
Except, wouldn't they have already known that before they met with him anyway? So why would they reject him afterward, or meet with him in the first place?
8 Hannah Forgetting June
Hannah's thoughts and feelings when she saw June weren't fully explained, but it appeared that she didn't even know who June was (or that's at least what June thinks). But that doesn't make any sense.
June and Hannah reunited for the first time pretty recently and Hannah still remembered her although it had been years since they'd seen one another, so it's unbelievable that she would remember June after all of that time and then forget her in the brief interim.
7 Alma And Brianna Getting Hit By A Train
From the start of season 4, it has seemed like The Handmaid's Tale was looking for ways to massively slim down its supporting cast, but one of the most absurd ways in which they did that was by having Brianna and Alma literally get hit by a train.
Not only did June take just enough time to essentially ensure that Brianna and Alma wouldn't make it, but even when it was clearly too dangerous, they both bafflingly ran into the oncoming train instead of stopping.
6 The Handmaids Getting Caught And Escaping
The back and forth with handmaids escaping and then getting caught has also been a little hard to believe. First, when June doesn't show up in the hideout after the farm, for some reason the handmaids just stay there and seemingly wait to be caught.
Then, once they are caught, they're being sent to a Magdalene Colony and escorted by a single guard and Aunt Lydia, and the door to the van carrying them isn't even locked.
5 Tuello Being Shocked That Serena Is A Baddie
It may just be a part of his strategy to get as much information out of the Waterfords as possible, but up until the end of season 3, Tuello seemed to look at Serena like she was just another victim of Gilead.
However, before the fall of the US she was one of the most prominent conservative voices in the country, and she said herself that she helped write the laws of Gilead. So how did Tuello know so little about who Serena really is?
4 The Waterford Household Escaping Gilead
Obviously June and the Waterfords are the central figures of the entire story, but the show comes up with a lot of absurd twists to keep bringing these characters back together even if it doesn't make sense according to the rules that the show has created.
One of the most surprising and unbelievable twists is that, despite the fact that escaping Gilead is supposedly borderline impossible, the entire Waterford household save for Nick has managed to make it to Canada.
3 Serena's Pregnancy
Miracle babies do happen, but the timing of Serena's pregnancy after how clearly The Handmaid's Tale seemed to establish Fred's infertility just seems too convenient to actually believe.
Serena undoubtedly did everything she could to have a child before the rise of Gilead, and she and Fred's relationship was basically over by the time they made it to Canada, so Serena suddenly getting pregnant after being with Fred once seems like a completely unrealistic plot contrivance.
2 Moira Finding June
It was only a matter of time before June made it to Canada, as it was already too hard to believe that she was still surviving Gilead at this point.
But the idea that Moira happened to go with her girlfriend to Chicago and she happened to run into June after the air raid is just too ridiculous to accept. The show hasn't always been very realistic in its plot twists, but this was a truly egregious betrayal of believability.
1 June's Endless Escapes
It's good that June is finally in Canada for many reasons, but one of the biggest is because at least now the show doesn't have to continually pull random excuses out of thin air to explain why June hasn't been brutally punished or outright killed despite being public enemy number one in Gilead.
She always finds her way out of whatever impossible situation she's in, and her plot armor is so thick that it's hard to believe that her character gets such exceptional treatment in comparison to everyone else.
