After a difficult journey both on and off The Bachelor, Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell’s relationship is back on track—and Matt says it’s all because Rachael put her foot down. The couple is reportedly getting more serious and have discussed moving in together, but it wasn’t easy getting to that stage in their relationship. Matt recently spoke about how their relationship almost fell apart after they gave it a second chance, but that Rachael’s hard-line approach was just what he needed.
Fans who watched The Bachelor finale and After the Final Rose special felt certain Matt and Rachael were done for good after racially insensitive photos from Rachael’s past resurfaced. However, after the show, the couple continued to date. They briefly split up, and Rachael was devastated, but now the two are back together and their relationship is progressing. Matt and Rachael have been spending a lot of time together lately, and on a recent podcast episode, Matt explained how they got to where they are now.
At first, Matt was hesitant to confirm he and Rachael were dating again, but he has since opened up about where their relationship is at. On the Pomp Podcast, Matt explained he wasn’t always the best at prioritizing his relationship. “It was honestly a commitment that we made to each other that we were going to work on the relationship,” Matt commented. “There came a point in time where it was evident that my working on the relationship looked different than Rachael’s because I wasn’t really honoring that commitment that I made to working on the relationship.”
Matt said he eventually had a “come to Jesus meeting” with Rachael, where she put his feet to the fire and made him pick a lane. “She was like, ‘If you’re going to make this work, let’s do it. But, if you’re not going to make it work, I’m going to let you do your own thing.’ That’s really all I needed,” said Matt. “It was an ultimatum that I needed. It’s been great.” Now that Matt is comfortable openly dating Rachael, things are finally going well for the pair.
Though Matt and Rachael have shared tough times, there’s no denying the chemistry between the two of them, and Matt commented on what it is that draws him to Rachael. “The best thing about Rachael is her heart. She’s the most kind, caring person, understanding, I’ve ever met,” he explained. “Everything we’ve been through, everything she’s been through, she’s stuck right by my side. She’s continued to have a positive attitude. It’s one of the many things I love about her.”
Matt and Rachael have had a far more difficult journey than most couples who come off The Bachelor, but it looks like they’re doing much better now. Sometimes people respond well to ultimatums, and Matt clearly needed one to get him to prioritize his relationship with Rachael. He seemed to be wishy-washy until Rachael told him what she needed. Matt appears to be happy he gave Rachael another chance, and things are looking up for the unlikely couple.
