Legends of Tomorrow's New Planet Makes Star Trek Ideas Even Weirder

Warning: SPOILERS for DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, Episode 2 - "Meat: The Legends."

DC's Legends of Tomorrow season 6 has Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) stuck in outer space after being abducted by aliens, and episode 2, "Meat: The Legends," not only nods at some classic Star Trek ideas but makes them even weirder. "Meat: The Legends" is one of the strangest episodes of The CW's time-traveling superhero show yet, which is saying something for Legends of Tomorrow. Of course, the Legends mixing with outer space would naturally reference Star Trek.

Legends of Tomorrow's Star Trek cred has already been well-established. The Legends season 5 episode, "The One Where We're Trapped On TV," was the most overt homages to Star Trek so far, where Sara and her fiancée Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan) were co-Captains of their own ship resembled the Starship Enterprise in a fake TV show called Star Trip. This came complete with Sara Lance speaking with William Shatner's unique cadence as Captain James T. Kirk. But once Sara was abducted by aliens, which turned out to be the same extraterrestrial race Gary Green (Adam Tsekhman) came from, there was no escaping further Star Trek nods. In "Meat: The Legends," Sara and Gary crash on a pink planet that belongs to the same "power-hungry space lord" who commission Gary and his fiancée to gather the universe's most dangerous creatures - including Sara.

Easily the weirdest part of Sara and Gary being stranded on this strange new world is the fact that they met Amelia Earhart, just like the crew of Star Trek: Voyager met the legendary aviator in the season 2 premiere, "The '37s." On Voyager, Earhart (Sharon Lawrence) was one of over 300 humans abducted by aliens named the Briori in 1937 to serve as slave labor on a planet in the Delta Quadrant. After Earhart was revived by Voyager's crew, she declined to join them on their journey back to Earth, although Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) was able to meet Amelia, one of her heroes. But as strange as that Star Trek encounter with Amelia Earhart was, it has nothing on Legends of Tomorrow's version of the famed missing pilot.

The Amelia Earhart (Kirsten Robek) in Legends of Tomorrow has been living in a hut on the alien world for decades, but she somehow hasn't aged. Earhart, however, is an excellent hostess who takes Sara Lance and Gary Green in and cooks them a stew that they rave about. Earhart soon acts strangely and begins repeating herself like a broken record. When the Legends try to leave, Earhart's face transforms into a monster, and a tendril from her mouth poisons Sara. While this version of Amelia Earhart is much weirder than the one on Star Trek: Voyager, their circumstances of being abducted by aliens is similar.

Another nod to Star Trek is Gary prattling on about the flora on his planet, and he notes that there are singing plants in his world. Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter) and the crew of the Enterprise encountered singing planets on Talos IV in the original Star Trek pilot, "The Cage." In Star Trek: Discovery season 2, Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) saw the same singing plants when she brought her brother Spock (Ethan Peck) back to Talos IV. Singing plants are a subtle nod to one of the very first strange new life forms in Star Trek.

After they crash on the pink planet with three moons, the first thing Sara and Gary see is a dog, specifically a golden retriever that leads them to Amelia Earhart. The dog resembles what was easily one of the absolute the strangest new Star Trek creations: The Dog, a genetically engineered creature made by Ensign D'Vani Tendi (Noel Wells) on Star Trek: Lower Decks. Since Tendi was an Orion, she didn't know what an Earth dog actually was, so while The Dog looked like a golden retriever, it could speak, fly, and shapeshift into other monstrous forms. It seems like Legends of Tomorrow season 6 is on a mission to out-weird Star Trek, and they're off to an excellent start.
