Minecraft fans have waited a long time for the iconic game’s underground cave systems to receive an overhaul, and Mojang certainly delivered with the Caves and Cliffs update. After nearly a decade of the same randomly generated structures, Minecraft caves will now have a stronger identity thanks to all the new blocks and features that were implemented in the highly anticipated update. Spelunking underground for rare ore and fighting monsters is better than ever, and one of the new block types added to flesh-out caverns is Pointed Dripstone.
Pointed Dripstone are the blocks that make up the stalactites and stalagmites in Minecraft’s new caves. Outside of making underground terrain more visually appealing and dynamic, they have a variety of practical applications players can make use of. Fall damage is multiplied when landing on a stalagmite, making them excellent traps to place in and around bases to ward off hostile players. Stalactites on the other hand deal damage when they fall from the ceiling, and when a cauldron is placed underneath them, they’ll collect any water or lava droplets that drip down over time. Minecraft fans can get a lot of mileage out of these blocks, so here’s how to make them.
There are two ways to find pointed dripstone naturally occurring in the world. The first is by going to locations where it grows and mining it with a pickaxe, like a miner normally would for other minable resources. Pointed Dripstone spawns frequently in the aptly named Dripstone Cave biome, a part of the second half of the Caves and Cliffs update, as well as in regular caves, though they are a less common occurrence there. Additionally, those who have built up a large collection of emeralds can trade them to a wandering trader NPC for two Pointed Dripstones per emerald. Because of their rarity, players will want to handle them with care.
Fortunately, there is a method to grow more dripstone after obtaining a few of them. If a pointed dripstone is placed upside down on a dripstone block, which are found naturally in the same areas or crafted using 4 pointed dripstone in a cube shape, the pointed dripstone will grow into a stalactite provided there is a source of water on top of the dripstone block. Also, there must be a block at least 11 blocks below the growing pointed dripstone. Over time, the pointed dripstone will grow longer and longer and more pointed dripstone can be harvested from it and farmed elsewhere. Given the perilous nature of caves, with all sorts of creatures lurking in the darkness nearby, it's best to farm them in a location away from harm at one's home, castle, or whatever it is they call their base.
Minecraft is available for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, and PC.
