Call of Duty: Warzone Season 4 brought a number of updates to the game, in conjunction with Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. New operators were added, as were new weapons and a dirt bike. Warzone continued its narrative from Season 3, with two international government agencies at war. However, especially compared to past seasons and other similar titles, nothing much of substance was added. Warzone could have done more to make Season 4 a fresh experience for its players.
In battle royale games such as Call of Duty: Warzone, it's standard for each season to introduce new content to keep the community engaged. Past seasons of Warzone have introduced interesting shake-ups, such as nuking the Verdansk map and transporting players back to 1984. The game has also brought in several special locations, like Die Hard's Nakatomi Plaza, so players can enjoy combat in iconic settings. Similar titles, like Apex Legends, Fortnite and PUBG, also do this exceptionally well, working to create interesting - and at times outlandish - storylines and season changes.
In comparison, Season 4 failed to bring in any noteworthy updates to give players a reason to stay in Verdansk. New weapons were minimal - though Season 4 gets points for allowing players to use environmental items as weapons, such as the baseball bat and nail gun. The added operators don't add much beyond new avatars and skins, as well as a tie-in to the story. Only one feature of Warzone Season 4 was cause for excitement: the red door fast travel option. Activision should have added many more features to make the game worth continuing.
A lot of the missed opportunity in Call of Duty: Warzone Season 4 came from the game's narrative. While the story of Season 4 is a continuation of the last season and doesn't make any illogical jumps, it simply wasn't exciting, especially as it manifested in gameplay. If the narrative had taken a more surprising turn, such as introducing zombies or some other kind of monster, it could have allowed more engaging elements to enter the field of play.
Warzone could also have been more inventive with Season 4's added weapons, vehicles and operators. Incorporating more Cold War-era technology into gameplay in order to make combat more suited to stealth kills instead of all-out brawls would have made for a more memorable season launch. Alternately, Call of Duty: Warzone could have taken a liberal interpretation of the '80s and leaned into threats of alien invasions or moles in ally organizations. Hopefully, Season 5 takes more risks.
