Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is releasing its 12th DLC character since the base game came out in December of 2018. Kazuya is the latest fighter to be added into Smash, and he is releasing alongside some notable new Mii Fighters. Although playable, these Mii Fighters will not be separate characters with unique abilities for fans to enjoy. While any addition to the game expands the universe, Mii Fighter costumes may not be the kind of character news fans were hoping for.
Nintendo has had an interesting problem when it comes to releasing DLC characters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It's a game enjoyed by many, and each player may want something a bit different from it, which makes it hard to please everyone when new characters are added. Many of the DLC announcements come with negative feedback from fans, especially if it's somehow another Fire Emblem character being added. It's certainly hard to please everyone, but Mii Fighter costumes might feel more like a slap in the face to some fans rather than a fun addition to try out.
The new Mii fighters coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are Lloyd, Dragonborn, Shantae, and Dante. Some of these fan-favorite characters are names that Smash fans have been championing for awhile, hoping to see them added, but just like many Mii Fighter costume reveals in the past, these reskins just can't compare to an actual character. The Mii Fighter permutations have no unique moves or powers that make them feel like a part of the game. Becoming a Mii Fighter has also historically meant that the character will not be added to the game in future DLC, which can make their inclusion all the more disappointing.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has some of the most recognizable video game characters of all time amongst its lineup, but there are some great ones that have only been added as Mii costumes. Game collaborations with Assassin's Creed, Bomberman, Fallout, and now Skyrim have all had characters appearing only as Mii Fighters. It is extremely unlikely that these iconic characters will end up added to the game's roster in the future, especially given that director Masahiro Sakurai has confirmed a coming end to future Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC. With only one DLC character left before the end, Lloyd, Shantae, and Dante are likely to only exist in the game as costumes.
One positive thing about this batch of Mii Fighters is the improvements to their designs. Knuckles and Tails released as odd mascots with human faces that did not overly seem to suit the characters upon which they were based, but newer releases like Bomberman and Creeper from Minecraft did away with the human face and stayed true to the original design. It's hard to get the Smash community to agree on everything most of the time, but Mii Fighters are generally viewed in a more negative light. With the coming end to the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC pipeline, however, having these characters in the game even as costumes is perhaps better than never seeing them at all.
