The Vampire Diaries: The 5 Most (& 5 Least) Realistic Storylines

Realism isn't something most people associate with fantasy shows and stories about vampires. However, the concept of realism is something that even shows such as The Vampire Diaries need to work with. Impossible things can happen in the story, but they still need to make sense in the context of the fictional world and fit with what the audience knows about the characters.

Despite its many positives, such as captivating villains and unexpected twists, The Vampire Diaries wasn't always a perfect show. Fans accepted some storylines better than they did others. And whether the said storylines felt realistic or not played a big part in how the audience viewed them.

10 Most Realistic: Katherine Dates Both Salvatore Brothers

Dating two people at the same time should be a big no-no. That doesn't mean it doesn't happen in real life, though. Back in 1864, Katherine seduced both Stefan and Damon. She enjoyed toying with them and the fact they were devoted to her.

But it looked like Katherine was truly ever in love with Stefan. At least that's what she said to Damon when they reunited in the 21st century. That didn't stop her from dating the two brothers and keeping it a secret from them.

9 Least Realistic: Caroline Carries Alaric's Children

The relationship between Caroline and Alaric felt wrong on multiple levels - for example, because he was her former teacher. Also, Caroline was in love with Stefan.

Yet when Candice Accola got pregnant, the show's creators decided to incorporate her pregnancy into the plot. Vampires are technically dead, yet Caroline was able to carry the twins to full term because of magic. Needless to say, this explanation didn't sit well with many fans.

8 Most Realistic: Caroline's Mom Dies

Many people died in the show. And a lot of them came back to life. Some of them even did it multiple times. But the one person who didn't come back was Liz Forbes, Caroline's mom. Liz and Caroline didn't always get along, but they grew closer eventually.

Caroline was devastated when she learned her mom was sick and dying. Liz had cancer which is something that can happen to characters in any show, vampires or no vampires.

7 Least Realistic: Characters Kept Coming Back To Life

Speaking of characters coming back to life, it eventually grew old. Almost every time the main characters died, it was obvious they would just return sooner or later.

And while it made sense in some cases, other times it fell far-fetched. For example, when Katherine returned from Hell or when she decided to jump into Elena's body.

6 Most Realistic: Bonnie Cut Off Her Friendship With Caroline

Elena and Bonnie may have been best friends, but Caroline and Bonnie were also close. Yet Bonnie decided to cut off their friendship at one point. While it was cruel to Caroline, it made sense from Bonnie's perspective.

Bonnie has been through a lot and vampires were the main source of all her problems. They led to the death of her grandma, to name just one. So when Bonnie learned Caroline was a vampire and killed someone, she just couldn't take it anymore and temporarily stopped talking to Caroline.

5 Least Realistic: Katherine Passes For Elena

Throughout the show, Katherine repeatedly impersonates Elena and gets away with it. While it makes sense when she has the same type of clothing and does her hair the same way, there are also instances when the characters should have realized something was amiss - simply because Katherine was dressed in a different way than Elena does and also styled her hair differently.

To name just one example, it happened during the party where Caroline confesses to 'Elena' that she hooked up with Klaus in the woods.

4 Most Realistic: Elena Breaks Down When Jeremy Dies

Elena has been through a lot of tragic losses. It was a small miracle she didn't snap in the show - until she did. When Elena realizes Jeremy is dead and won't be coming back, she breaks down in tears.

She sobs, heartbroken, while her friends aren't able to calm her down. To be honest, such a scene has been a long time coming, and Elena's reaction to the awful realization feels realistic.

3 Least Realistic: Silas, Amara And The Origin Of Doppelgängers

One of the weakest storylines in the show featured Silas, Amara, Qetsiyah, and the story of how the doppelgängers came to be.

Except it didn't really fit in with the rest of the show and belongs among the most forgettable plot points, possibly because the audience was tired of doppelgängers by this point or because it changed the already established fact that Klaus and his family were the oldest vampires, the Originals.

2 Most Realistic: Jeremy's Drug Problems, Elena's Depression

After their parents die and their aunt Jenna starts raising them, neither Elena nor Jeremy are doing so well. Elena closes herself off from the rest of the world, becomes sad and distant. Jeremy, on the other hand, starts experimenting with drugs.

Every person reacts differently to grief, and it's easy to imagine real teenagers could act similarly if they lost their parents.

1 Least Realistic: Elena Falls In Love With Damon

This might be a controversial point for some fans since many people love the couple. However, Damon acts like a real villain multiple times in the show. For example, Damon abuses Caroline and kills Jeremy.

Yet Elena forgives him and falls in love with him - even though Damon snaps and lashes out every time he feels like people disappointed him. That's not exactly screaming a normal person, but Elena ignores all the red flags and gets together with Damon anyway.
