Sam & Bucky’s Warehouse Fight With John Walker Happened Last Minute

One of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s most important action scenes is the battle between Sam and Bucky and John Walker, which apparently came together very last-minute. The MCU series finished its six-episode run on April 23 and received generally positive reviews, though some criticisms have been leveled at the show’s inconsistent pacing and mixed thematic messaging. Overall though, Marvel fans seem to be happy with the end product.

The tension between new Captain America, John Walker, and Sam and Bucky is one of the main emotional arcs of the series, and it comes to a head at the beginning of episode 5, after Walker brutally murders an unarmed member of the Flag-Smashers. The two former Avengers confront Walker in a warehouse and ask him to hand the shield over and turn himself in. Walker refuses, starting a fight that ends with Sam’s wingsuit destroyed, Walker defeated, and the shield back in Sam’s possession.

Though the warehouse battle is a major moment in Falcon & the Winter Soldier’s story, it came together pretty last-minute. Speaking with IndieWire, cinematographer P.J. Dillon discussed the particular challenges of filming the scene, which he said was his action sequence to shoot. “That was funny because of various location problems in Atlanta that we had. Dillon said. He then elaborated:

We found the [warehouse] location for that sequence only a couple of days before we shot it. So it wasn’t as well prepped, but the stunt team had to find the moves and clearly define the fight choreography and how we made that fit into the space. We actually figured it out as we went along.

I knew there was always the potential for those shafts of sunlight to come through from that side of the building at a certain time of day…But there was no guarantee that you’d actually get the sun…Luckily, we got this magical shaft of light coming into space…We immediately dropped everything and put the characters into it and filled it with smoke.

Fortunately, the location provided the perfect venue for Sam to reclaim the iconic shield. Dillon was able to capture the moment just as he’d hoped, with Bucky taking the shield from Walker and returning it to Sam. It’s a particular poignant shot, especially given its symbolism of Sam finally accepting the Captain America legacy. Though the venue was found at the last second, it ended up great for the final cut.

With Sam officially donning the Captain America mantle at the end of the show, the shield will likely continue to feature in the MCU for years to come. A fourth Captain America film from showrunner, Malcolm Spellman, starring Anthony Mackie is currently in development for an undisclosed release date down the line. With luck, it can continue the story of Falcon & the Winter Soldier in meaningful ways.
